Born November 15, 1920, in Freedom Township, Henry County, the youngest son of Carl H. and Sophia (Heiberg) Bockelman. Graduated from Ridgeville Corners High School, 1938. Graduated from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, 1942, and from Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, 1945. Also attended Wooster College, Ohio State University, and University of Minnesota. Received Master's Degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, New York City, 1956.
Served as pastor of Canaan-Salem Lutheran Parish, Wooster, Ohio, 1945-47. From 1947-1965 on Editorial staff of Wartburg Press, Columbus, Ohio, and Augsburg Publishing House, Minneapolis, Minn., as editor of Luther League Leader, Lutheran Youth, and associate editor of The Lutheran Standard. In 1965 was founder, editor, and publisher of Expanse magazine. In 1966 became assistant director of public relations of The American Lutheran Church, and in 1974 was named director of Communication Research and Special Projects of The American Lutheran Church.
Married A. Eleanor Lehman of Columbiana on May 26, 1946. Two daughters: Karen Gaye, born March 8, 1947, and Marla Joy, born February 8, 1949. Both daughters are graduates of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. Karen served two years as teacher in American School for Missionaries' Children in Madagascar, then taught high school for two years in Shakopee, Minn., and then became staff associate at University Lutheran Church, East Lansing, Mich. Entered Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., in 1975 with the expectation of becoming an ordained minister.
Marla specialized in special education for the mentally retarded and taught one year in Milwaukee, Wis., and two years in Douglas, Arizona. In 1975 she was named deputy juvenile court officer in Chillicothe, Missouri. Marla married Daniel Schoenfelder on December 29, 1973. Daniel is involved in the ranching business, specializing in Charolais cattle. After their marriage, Daniel was manager of the 40,000 acre Rainbow's End Ranch in Douglas, Ariz., and in 1974 was named business administrator of the Litton Charolais Ranch in Chillicothe. Both of these ranches, and a third ranch in Buckeye, Arizona, are owned by Daniel's father, Gerald P. Schoenfelder. Jason Daniel Schoenfelder was born to Daniel and Marla on March 26, 1975.
Wilfred and Eleanor Bockelman have spent all of their lives in the work of the American Lutheran Church, mostly in the writing field. Both of them are writers and have written several books individually and have collaborated on two. They have traveled extensively together in Europe and Africa, and Wilfred has traveled also in Asia, Australia, and New Guinea, gathering material to report on the condition of the church in various parts of the world.
