Joseph Tate and two of his brothers came from Dayton, Ohio area to Henry County. The rest of the family were lost and separated during the Civil War years.
The brothers settled on a farm in Liberty Township that is known today as the Earl Zarhend farm on State Route 424, east of Napoleon, Ohio.
Joseph Tate married Martha White on March 28, 1850 and they had six children: James, John, Joseph, Ada, Susan and Evaline. Joseph died on Octo ber 10, 1901, and Martha died on February 18, 1837.
James Tate settled in New Hagerstown, Ohio. He married Kate Stedman on October 8, 1978. They had one son, William Tate. Kate passed away, and later, James married Rachel Swinehart. James was a postmaster and ran a general store in New Hagerstown. They had three children, Joseph, Clair, and Miriam.
William Tate married Dael Nichols. They lived in Urbana, Ohio, and had two children, Paul and Virginia. Paul passed away in March, 1939. Virginia married Kenneth Corfman. Kenneth operated the Farm Bureau and Virginia taught school in Urbana. Their sons were William, John, Ned Allen, James and Donald. All are married except James.
Joseph Tate married Alice Baldsham and lived in California. Their sons are Jack and James. Joe and Alice have passed away.
Clair married Areline Price and they live in New Hagerstown, Ohio. Their daughters are Marcille and Audry. Clair has passed away.
Miriam taught school in the Commercial Department of Parkersberg, West Virginia School System. She married Wayne Hibbit and lives in the state of Florida.
John Tate married Sarah Stedman. They made their home in Toledo, Ohio. John worked in a hardware store. They had two sons, Leslie and Earl. Leslie is single and lives in Toledo. Earl married and had two children, John and Barbara. Earl died in February, 1961.
Ada Tate married Rev. Hildred Hudson. They had one son, Clyde. Clyde married Iona Ritter and they had William, Helen Virginia, and Lulu. Clyde died in November, 1959.
Evaline Tate never married and lived with her parents. She died at an early age.
Susan Patterson Tate never married and worked as a seamstress in a tailor shop in Toledo. In her later life, she lived with her nephew, Clyde Hudson.
Joseph Whitehill Tate, known as Hill, married Deborah Barbee on November 30, 1893. Deborah Barbee came to Deshler in a covered wagon from the state of Illinois with her parents, William and Elizabeth S. Barbee, and her brothers, William and Lewis, and sister Eliza, who later married
Adam Cook. Both parents died while trying to clear the land for their home. Debra was taken and raised by Mr. and Mrs. John Cochran. They renamed her as Emma Cochran. She had foster brothers, Milton, Harry, August and Roy. Joseph and Deborah had six girls, Edna, Ethel, Mary, Hildred, Susan and Edith.
Edna is a registered nurse, having graduated from Robinwood Hospital, now St. Luke's, in 1920. She nursed in Napoleon, Toledo, Wauseon and Defiance Hospitals and in many area homes. She retired in 1960 and is enjoying retirement by crocheting, knitting and needlepoint. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a fifty year member of the Rebekah Lodge.
Ethel, graduated from Napoleon High School and Bowling Green Normal School, taught school in Napoleon School system and the Freedom Township county schools. She married Albert Roddy on June 14, 1926. They owned a farm close to the school. They had one daughter, Marcella May. Ethel and Albert have both passed away.
Marcella graduated from Ridgeville High School and worked in the office of the Reiter-Rogers Insurance Office in Napoleon, Ohio. She married, on May 17, 1952, Leslie Hurtig. They lived in Paulding County. They have five children, LeRoy, Pamela, Mira Sue, June and Thomas. LeRoy is a mechanic in a farm implement store and graduated from Paulding High School. Pamela graduated from Paulding High School and Bowling Green University where she majored in Spanish. She has been working with the migrant .workers for the State of Ohio. Mira Sue is a waitress. June Ann and Thomas are still students in school. Marcella died on February 28, 1973.
Mary Tate, a graduate of Napoleon High School, attended North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Bowling Green University. She taught one year in Freedom Township country school and forty-five years in Napoleon Schools. She helped organize the local chapter of the Henry County Retired Teachers Association, of which she is a charter member, and a member of the National Retired Teachers Association. She belongs to the First Presbyterian Church and is. on the Board of Deacons. Mary retired in 1968 and keeps busy calling on the sick, cooking, making hooked rugs, and tending her flower garden.
Hildred, a graduate of Napoleon High School, was a registered nurse, having graduated from Robinwood Hospital in 1924. She nursed in Napoleon and Wauseon Hospitals and many area homes. She married Lawrence Sherman on February 22, 1930. They farmed in Napoleon and Liberty Townships and in Fulton County. They had two children. A daughter, Mary Elizabeth, died in childbirth; their son is Lawrence Charles Sherman.
Lawrence Charles married Joyce Shumaker on September 16, 1950. They are both graduates of Liberty Center High School. They live on State Route 109 between Delta and Liberty Center. Charles is a truck driver and owns his own rigs. Joyce works at Napco Plastics in Napoleon, Ohio. They have seven children: Peggy Ann, Douglas, Rodney Joe, Richard, Michael, Steven and Wendy..
Peggy Ann graduated from Liberty Center High School and attended Bowling Green State University. She worked in the State Library in Napoleon, Ohio. On December 10, 1972, she married Charles Lesnewicz. Charles works for United Parcels Department, Toledo, Ohio. They have two children, Andrew and Kerry, and live between Delta and Liberty Center, Ohio.
Douglas graduated from Delta High School and works in a Loan Office in Wauseon, Ohio. He married Chareline Byer on September 15, 1973. They have one son, Joshua. They live in Lansing, Michigan where. Douglas works in a repair department of Trailer Homes.
Rodney Joe is attending college in Des Moines, Iowa. He is a graduate of Delta High School.
Richard graduated from Delta High School and is going to college in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Michael, Steven and Wendy are still in school.
Susan is single and has worked in offices as manager and bookkeeper. She graduated from Napoleon High School and attended Davis Business College in Toledo, Ohio. She worked in a number of offices, and has worked in the Miami Children's Home for six and a half years. She is a charter member of the Soroptomist International, is a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and is presently working at the Cochran Electric Inc. as a bookkeeper.
Edith graduated from Napoleon High School and married Albert Ludeman on November 26, 1936. They lived in Napoleon. Their daughter, Beverly Ann, was born on June 25, 1938, but both Edith and Beverly passed away at that time.
Edna, Mary, and Susan. Tate are all single and live in a new home they designed and had built at 1096 Westmont, Napoleon, Ohio.
