John W. and Susan (Spiegel) Tanier came from New Jersey to Ohio in the spring of 1877 and lived northwest of Liberty Center. John W. (called Jack) was the son of Thomas and Mary (Kent) Tanier and was the only one of their seven children to come to Ohio. (Thomas always said that Tanier was French and it should not be pronounced "Tanner", but the area descendants do so.) Susan was one of seven children of Phillip and Hester (Palmer) Spiegel. She and her husband were persuaded to come to Ohio by her older sister Patience and her husband John West who had moved here earlier with their children, Fannie, Mary Ann, John, Adam, and Eva. A number of the John West descendants live in the area.
John W. and Susan Tanier had twelve children. Annie, Emma, Anna Louise, and Eliza all died young in New Jersey. Mary, Samuel, Charles, Ida, Clara, and John came to Ohio with their parents. Hannah and George were born in Ohio but died as infants.
Mary Tanier married Theodore Clapp and their descendants are listed under the Clapp Family in this volume.
Samuel Tanier never married.
Charles Tanier married Eva Hodges and their children were Harry, Mabel, Ruth, Edith, Helen, Alva, and Earl.
Ida Tanier married Stanton Gray and their children were Cora, Arthur, Elma, Earl, and Owen.
Clara Tanier married Charles Holden and their children were Sylvester, Dannie, and Dorothy.
John Phillip Tanier married Bessie Tester and their children were Eveland (Mrs. Albert Linthicum), Lovell (Mrs. Eugene Ellsworth), and Irene (Mrs. Roy Lang).
