The Spangler family, German Lutheran, emigrated from Bavaria, Germany about 1759 to Pennsylvania and later to Ohio. Enoch, one of five children, was born on January 29, 1809 in Salt Creek, Twp. Pickaway Co. to the Eli Spanglers. The other children were Levi, Jesse, Tom and Elizabeth. Levi, Jesse and Elizabeth came to Henry County about 1850. Tort, a minister, went to Tarlton, Ohio.
On July 1, 1851 Levi bought land in Henry County, Bartlow Twp. The transfer was made to him by Millard Fillmore, then President of the United States.
Pickaway County was later subdivided and Enoch then married and lived on his own farm near Lithopolis, Fairfield Co. He was married three times. His first wife, a Polly Creitz, whom he married on November 2, 1828 — two daughters were born.
They were Mariah (Spangler) Neiswander and Sally (Spangler) Glick. After the death of their mother they lived with their grandparents. On May 11, 1834, he married Sally (Sarah) Gensel. Eight children were born to them: Marion, who served in the Civil War, Susan, Mahala, Cordelia, Polly, Rufus, Levi and John, who was only two years old when their mother died. A number of years later he married a Sarah McCormick who had three daughters from a former marriage. Susan (Spangler) Foor, Rufus, and John went to Malinta; Marion to Hamler.
Levi, born October 4, 1853, was married to Iva Alberta Smith, born March 22, 1850. Date of their marriage was October 14, 1875 near Lithopolis, Ohio Fairfield Co., They came to Ma- linta in 1881 where they operated a grocery store and barber shop. On the 21st of August 1885 Levi was appointed the second postmaster of Malinta by A. E. Stenison, Post Master General in the Grover Cleveland Administration.
He decided to purchase a piece of land from his Uncle Levi, which was a wilderness of trees and swamp. To clear the land, he would walk the ten miles from Malinta to the farm in Bartlow Twp. stay several days at a time, carrying his food and tools on his back and live in a small shanty he had built.
Twelve years after moving to Malinta, they, with their five sons, moved to the farm, lived in the shanty until a house could be built. In 1893 the house was built from timber off the land. In 1913 he retired. Grover and
Nelson did the farming. In 1914 he purchased the Smith Piddock Property and moved to Deshler. He passed away Oct. 21, 1922. Mrs. Spangler passed away March 13, 1935. They were the parents of twelve children; nine sons and three daughters. Three died in infancy. Emery died at age eighteen of typhoid fever.
Martin married Myrtle Blue. He taught school, attended college at Valparaiso, Indiana University and graduated with a law degree. He practiced in Albion, Indiana. They were parents of five children: Virginia (Spangler) Morrell; Walter, a graduate of Purdue University and a geologist for Standard Oil; Donald, a graduate of the Naval Academy Annapolis, Maryland assigned to the Cruiser Atlanta, sank by the Japanese at Guadalcanal buried at sea. In his honor the U.S.S. Spangler was built at Bay City, Michigan, christened by his mother and launched at New Orleans. Robert also served in the Navy during the war and is with Esso in Baltimore, Md.; and Mary K. (Spangler) Hutchens.
Grover, a farmer, married Clara Dittman and were parents of eight children: Evelyn; Stanley, a minister; Dorothy; Paul, a farmer; Melvin, a farmer in Missouri; Velma (Spangler) Dorman; Richard, with Western Auto in Alabama; and Eldon, with Metal Forge.
Edwin married Cosa Peterson and was a farmer in Holland, Ohio. Eleven children were born: Mildred (Mrs. Reed Hathaway and one son, Norman Scott); Edna; Emery; Stanley, who was in World War II, T-3 stationed in Ireland; John; Donald; 1st Class with Gen. George Patton; Gladys; Waneta; Elmolie; and Evelyn.
Leo married Marjory Davis. He taught school, later owned and managed The Pure Milk Dairy. They were parents of five children: Richard; William, with Dohler Jarvis; Robert, a Merchant Marine in World War II and employed by Meadow Gold Milk Dairy; Madelyn (Spangler) Austin; Helen (Spangler) Klear, a teacher in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Pearl, a teacher, married Hosea Burner — seven children: Esther, graduate of Bowling Green University, teacher in Cleveland and married Clyde Clark — two children, Richard and Ann; Gerldine; Ralph; Raymond, in Korean War, 171 First Field Artillery Bat. B. now with the Pickands Mather Co. as a C.P.A. in Cleveland — three children: Raymond, Ronald, and Ruth Ann; Waneta, a Bowling Green graduate, teacher, and married Victor Gerken — three children, Robert, Vickie and Jeff; Barbara, married Paul Cordes — one child, Tom; Jeaneete, a Bowling Green graduate, teacher, married Robert Clines — two sons, Robert and Scott.
Leona, a teacher, married Levoy Boyer on Nov. 5, 1919. They had three sons, Paul, Beryl and Dale. Paul married Virginia Ark, served with the 8th
Air Force in England as a B-24 Bomber Pilot retiring as a major in the U.S.A.F.R. He also retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio as a Systems Engineer. They have three children, Paula Campbell, David and John. Dale married Patsy Thornton — five children: Alan, Mark, Linda and twins, Judy and Janet. He was with the 28th Division in Germany during the Korean War. Now a storekeeper with B&O and C&O Railroad.
Nelson married Beulah Larue, August 29, 1920 and managed the farm (1920-1924) when he then purchased it from his mother. They retired in 1962. Harley manages the farm. They are the parents of eight children; four sons and four daughters. Clifford F. Spangler enlisted with the United States Coast Guard and served in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. He is now night foreman at Metal Forge in Deshler. He married Arlene Conkey and they have five daughters: Carol, Sharon, Patty, Nancy and Jan and live in Deshler, Ohio.
Howard Spangler enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and served in World War II; he is a purchasing agent for Sherwin Williams. He married Lillian Gourley and they have two children, Michael and Rebecca.
Raymond D. Spangler served in the Occupation Forces in the Infantry in Germany; he is a farmer in Winchester, Illinois. He married Marianne Doyle and they have three children, Linda, Dixie and Mark.
Harley W. Spangler served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Germany four years; is a farmer; and married Patricia Sullens. They have two daughters, Sheila and Laura Le.
Lois R. Spangler graduated from Otterbein College in Westerville in Business Administration; married Earl Geer and they have three children: Mike, Robin and Mark. They live in Buffalo, New York.
Janet L. Spangler, a bank teller in Custer, Ohio, married Paul Inselmann and has six children: Karen, Greg, Kathie, Anita, Julie and William.
Arlene A. Spangler is a graduate of Toledo Hospital School of Nursing. She served in the Air Force; married William Goodwin and they live in Salem, Virginia. They have four children: Robert, David, Scott and Nacole.
Judith A. Spangler is a graduate of Toledo Hospital School of Nursing, served in the Air Force six years, and is now an R.N. in Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay. She married Otie Rigney and they have three children: Kathie, Matthew and Julie.
Norman, the last son of the Levi Spangler family, married Dorothy Fretter on July 15, 1923. They live in McClure, Ohio and have two children: Marie Rohrbaugh of Napoleon, and Larry of Ocala, Florida.
