Robert Shumaker was born in Richfield Township, Henry County, Ohio, on February 19, 1926. He is the son of Harry L. and Marietta (Shufelt) Shumaker, and grandson of Harley L. and Mary (Hefflinger) Shumaker and Ode and Marcia (French) Shufelt. Robert has one sister, Dorothy, born May 5, 1929.
Robert graduated from Napoleon High School in 1944. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 75th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II. While serving with the 75th Division, he was engaged in two major campaigns; the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was discharged from the service on June 20, 1946. He is presently employed as a Maintenance Supervisor at Campbell Soup Company.
Robert married Sandra Dawn Leifer on October 10, 1959, in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Napoleon, Ohio; the Rev. Mark H. Wegner officiating. Sandra was born in Napoleon, Ohio, on July 31, 1936. She graduated from Napoleon High School in 1954 and attended Bowling Green State University. She was then employed as a Secretary at Campbell Soup Company for eighteen years. Sandra is the daughter of Donald C. and Esther (Bernicke) Leifer, and the granddaughter of Albert and Bertha (Franz) Leifer and William and Ida (Glanz) Bernicke.
Robert and Sandra lived at 715 West Maumee Avenue for twelve years, and presently reside at 655 Buckeye Lane.
They are the parents of one son, Mark Robert, who was born on July 15, 1974. Mark is the ninth generation of the Shumaker family to live in America. The Schumacher family originally came from Liechstenstein, Germany. Then John, the father of Johannes, went to Baden in the Province of Hessen. The first Schumacher family to come to America was Johannes Schumacher who was born in 1698 in the Province of Hessen, Germany. He came to America on the Ship Loyal Judith on September 3, 1742. His descendants are a son Jost Schumacher (birth date unknown). A son of Jost was William Schumacher, born October 11, 1766, who lived in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. One of William's sons was David Schumaker, born August 28, 1804. He lived in Crawford County, Ohio. One of David's sons was Jonas Shumaker, born January 6, 1836. He came to Henry County in the early 1850's. He established a homestead on the south- side of Napoleon, just outside the present city corporation limits. One of his sons was Harley L. Shumaker, born November 27, 1866. He retained a portion of the original homestead until 1949. One of Harley's sons was Harry L. Shumaker, born July 13, 1893. Harry's son, Robert Shumaker, was born February 19, 1926; and his son, Mark Robert Shumaker, was born July 15, 1974. Mark Robert is the fifth generation to live in Napoleon.
