Parlee J. Shively was born August 21, 1883 in Wood County, Ohio. He was the only son of Cassius Henry and Samilda Jane (Reese) Shively. Parlee grew up on the family farm in Jackson Township in Wood County and helped his father farm until 1921. On April 24, 1907 he married Mary Mae Ross. She was born at Russ Corners, Weston, Ohio on September 25, 1882. She was the daughter of William and Louisa Emily (Heyman) Ross. Her mother was the daughter of a German immigrant and her father was of Irish descent.
Parlee and Mary Mae had five children: Robert Ross, Ruth Marie, James Boyd, June Josephine, and Jeanette Mildred. All the children were born on the family farm in Jackson Township, Wood County.
In January of 1921 Parlee moved his family to a farm on State Route 235, northeast of Weston, Ohio. It was here that his wife Mary died' on July 10, 1922. Parlee decided to move his family to new surroundings and chose to move to Westhope in Henry County. The family made the move in March, 1929.
Parlee remarried on November 9, 1936 and took up housekeeping with his new bride, Bernita Main, on a farm north of McClure. He remained there until his death on September 14, 1942. He is buried in the Weston, Ohio Cemetery. Since "The Blizzard of 1978" Mrs. Shively has lived with Bernita Murphy who is caring for her.
