John Scofield was born in New York State in 1814. He became a resident of Ridgeville Township in 1855.
In 1859, John Scofield purchased the land that the village of Ridgeville was later platted from and in 1861 he was appointed postmaster by President Lincoln and the post office name of the village became Ridgeville Corners.
He was proprietor of a general store for many years in Ridgeville.
