James Scofield, born 1821, New York, came to Flatrock Township in 1833. He was elected county surveyor in 1846 and served until 1852.
About 1850 he started a general store in Florida, Ohio. He had married Catharine Loesch in 1849. He was appointed postmaster of Florida, Ohio, in 1850, served until 1856, and again served from 1861 until 1864 as postmaster.
The family moved to Okolona in 1864 and James Scofield became the first postmaster there when it was established as a post office. He served from 1865 until 1869.
