Son of Henry and Anna Schwiebert, he was the youngest child born November 20, 1890, on the home place 11/2 miles north and 1 mile west of Hamler, Ohio, in Henry Co. He married Lydia Marie Drewes Feb. 22, 1914, and they lived on the Panning Farm 1 mile west of the home place. Lydia was born Aug. 4, 1896, and came from the Dietrich and Catherine Drewes family from Napoleon, Ohio.
After some years they bought the home place of 80 acres. Many of the buildings were made of log of which the house still remains. Karl and his brother Fred exchanged labor farming a number of years and gradually retired when they bought a house in Hamler in 1951.
They belonged to Hope Lutheran Church all their life. Karl passed away Dec., 1963, after a short illness at the age of 73. Lydia lives in Hamler at the present and is active in many things.
They had three children: Margret, Marcella, and Burdell.
Margret, the eldest, was born May 31, 1917. She married Merlyn Davis on August 22, 1937. They operate and own the Davis Towne and Country Cleaners in Defiance, Ohio. They have two sons: Doug, who was born Feb. 6, 1942. He married Mary Brubaker of Huntington, Indiana. They have a daughter Kathy, born July 22, 1973. The other son Robert married Diane Mottashed of Defiance. They have two sons: Robi, born Nov. 27, 1970, and Ryan, born May 13, 1974. Doug is a rural mail carrier and works part time as a presser for his father and his wife Mary works in the office of the Dresser Industries and they live in Defiance, Ohio. Robert is in the photography department at Owen's Corning Fiberglas in Toledo. His wife Diane is a nurse at Toledo Hospital and they live in Toledo.
Marcella was born November 25, 1919 She graduated from Hamler High School. After that she worked in the Toledo area where she met and married Marvin Leck of Rossford. He worked for Gulf Oil and they lived in Evanston, Ill. While there, they had a daughter, Sheri. She was born Oct. 24, 1956. After a few years they were transferred to Pittsburgh, Pa. Then Marvin took an early retirement from
Gulf Oil and they moved to Newport Beach, California. Sheri graduated from high school there and is now attending junior college. Presently they are moving to Houston, Texas, where he is starting a business of his own.
Burdell was born April 16, 1926, and graduated from Hamler High School. He served during World War II as an infantryman on the front lines. On Feb. 3, 1951, he married Helen Sager of Hamler. They moved on the old home place after his parents moved to Hamler. In 1960 they built and ran the Dairy Bell Drive-In in Hamler, Ohio, till 1968. He has farmed all his life. They had three children: Rick, born April 17, 1952. He graduated from Patrick Henry High School and is presently selling insurance for Golden United Life and farming in partnership with his father. Pat was born June 18, 1954. She lives in Defiance and is a cashier at TG&Y Store. She graduated from Defiance High School. Scott was born Dec. 24, 1957, and is a senior at Patrick Henry High School and plays football besides helping on the farm.
