Peter Schuller, born June 6, 1818, came from Lorain County, Ohio, to Pleasant Township, Henry County, Ohio. He married Susan Theisen, and they had six children, three males and three females. In 1862, they bought a twenty-five acre farm from the Joseph Mailhl executors, on Road C, one- fourth mile north of Sacred Heart Church.
The Schuller children were Emma, Gertrude, Susan, Nicholas, John and Mathias.
Nicholas was a carpenter at a young age. He married Margaret Kelling of Sheffield, Ohio, and they had five children born to them in New Bavaria, Ohio. The children were William, Fred, Veronica (Frona), Catherine, and Irene.
Nicholas bought lot no. 33 in New Bavaria in 1886, and there he built a large two story frame building. The upstairs held a big line of furniture, with a second room that held undertaking equipment and supplies. A hand operated elevator was used for large or heavy objects. Downstairs, along one side, there was a big line of groceries, barrels and boxes full of goods, a good line of yard goods and sewing supplies, jewelry, lamps, clocks, shoes and boots, etc.; one side of the store was a large line of hardware. The house was a two story one attached to the store.
John and Mary (Swary) Schuller, about 1894
New horse drawn hearse of Nick Schuller about 1900. It was carpeted, always brushed out and cleaned after each funeral. Some of the drivers were son, Fred Schuller, Bernard Limpach and Raymond Giesige covering Miller City, North Creek, Continental, McClure, Hamler, Leipsic, Stanley and Ayersville.
Nicholas was an undertaker. He would prepare the bodies in the homes, where they would be left until burial. He first used a spring wagon to transport the bodies; a little later he bought an iron wheeled horse drawn hearse. A few years later he purchased a fancy black hearse with rubber tires, lights on it that burned wood alcohol, and black horses. The last team of black horses he purchased from Mr. Mack of Ney, Ohio. If a child had passed away, white horses were usually used.
Nicholas was born September 3, 1854, and died in 1942. His wife, Margaret, was born in 1863 and died in 1930 at Carey, Ohio. Both now rest in the Sacred Heart Mausoleum.
