Translating the front: Coat of Arms of Family "Schroder," originating from Thuringen. In the 2nd book of the European Coat of Arms record page 16.
Christian Schroeder brought it along when he and his family came to America in 1854. He treasured this very highly and requested it be kept securely. My first knowledge of it came when my neighbor, Mary Schroeder Wendt, showed it to me, thinking I might be interested in it. It was in a picture frame and after examining it further I noticed a message on the back written in German. Translated in English, it says:
"The Coat of Arms of the Schroeder Family shows a shield divided into four fields, in the 1st and 4th blue field a golden lion, and in the 2nd and 3rd red field a silver steed. On the crowned helmet are shown seven ostrich plumes. The helmet covering is blue, gold, red, and silver. An old Thuringer family whose forefathers showed special bravery in the Thirty Years War."
The Thirty Years War was a religious and political war in central Europe, 1618-1648. It broke out between the Protestants and Catholics in Bohemia, and soon involved all Germany. The war was concluded by the peace of Westphalia in 1846. The destruction of life and property was so great that Germany was set back for a century.
