Carl H. "Charlie," son of Christian Schroeder and Dorothea Becker Schroeder, was born in Kleden, Prussia, on March 24, 1843. Being a young man at the time of the Civil War, he enlisted on Sept. 18, 1862. He was in the 37th Ohio Regiment and served until Feb. 4, 1865. Those years made a lasting impression on his memory and he never tired of telling about his experiences. He took part in eight battles, being wounded in the Kenesaw Mountain battle; he was hospitalized for some time.
On Nov. 19, 1870, he was united in marriage with Wilhelmina Brandt, and on Dec. 10, 1870, purchased the farm in Section 31, Ridgeville Township. This union was blessed with three children, one of whom died in infancy. On Sept. 2, 1873, his wife died. On April 24, 1874, he married Doris Joost, born Nov. 3, 1850. They had ten children. He purchased a farm in Sec. 31 of Ridgeville Township, devoting his time to farming and community affairs. After retiring he moved to Ridgeville Corners with his wife and daughter Mary. Doris passed away on Aug. 23, 1924. Carl H. continued his retirement with his daughter Mary, and passed away on Feb. 27, 1931.
The children were: Wilhelm A. born Oct. 9, 1868; Emma born Nov. 9, 1871; Anna born Aug. 29, 1873; Charles H. born June 2, 1875; Ida K. and Maria A. born Dec. 13, 1876; Otto C. born Feb. 15, 1879; Wilhelmina and Hugo born June 22, 1881; Albert born Sept. 16, 1883; Emil born Aug. 12, 1886; Amelia born Nov. 24, 1888; and Agnes J. born Feb. 21, 1893.
