Carl, only son of James and Clara Miller Rowland, was born November 2, 1899, on the Thomas Rowland farm in Damascus Township. He attended the Ballmer school and graduated from Damascus Township high school. At that time, his father having built the garage (the old Neuhauser Hatchery building), he went into business in partnership with Harold Nelson. Later Louis Smith bought Harold's share and the business continued.
On June 15, 1921, he married Mildred R. Anthony and they started housekeeping in a suite of rooms above Nelson's Gem Theatre. Later they occupied a number of different homes. In one of these homes, (the Grandma Collin's home now occupied by Mrs. Kenneth Watson), their daughter, June Elizabeth, was born on May 8, 1923. The family moved to the William Spenser home (now owned by Agnes Rudolph) and when the home was sold, they built their own home in 1924. That home is now owned by Mrs. Carl Mowery. On January 9, 1925, their son, Robert Stuart, was born.
In 1927, having sold the garage to Louis Smith, they spent the winter in Tucson, Arizona with the family of Norma Rowland Brown. In the spring of 1928, they returned home to McClure and Carl went to work for the highway department on the Canal Road east of Damascus Bridge.
Mildred's mother having died, Carl and Mildred moved to the Anthony farm to be with her father. There Carl raised all kinds of small fruit, melons and sweet corn for the Detroit and Toledo markets.
On October 11, 1938, a daughter, Ruth Anne, was born. Carl went to work for the State Highway Division # 2 in Bowling Green where he worked as a machinist until his retirement in 1965.
