The name of Fredrick Rhoad was handed down from one generation to another. Frederick Rhoad, Jr., was born in Germany in 1776.
When he became of the age when all young must be mustered into service, Frederick and his brother, Anthony, set out to find a land where each could do as he pleased. They sailed from their home and loved ones and after a voyage of seven months landed in New York. They remained there a day or two then started out by themselves but became lost from each other, never hearing of the other again.
Frederick traveled until he came to Mifflin County, Pennsylvania where he stayed sometime in 1805. He married Elizabeth Bowerman. They had twelve children: Michael, Frederick, Joel, John, Joseph, Magdalene, George, Peter, Elizabeth, Susannah, and twins, Cathern and Mary.
Enduring the hardships of pioneer life, they clothed their boys in coats and pants of the skin of the deer that were plentiful. The hides were tanned so as to retain their softenss. Wild turkeys were numerous. Clothed in the deer skins, they would take a bone, go out very early, and hide and call turkeys. When the turkeys came up they were sure to get some of them for food.
From Mifflin County, they came to Ohio, locating near Marion, Ohio. From Marion they moved to one mile north of Republic, Ohio.
Fredrick's two brothers, John and Philip, and three sisters, Lizzie, Barbara, and Julie, came to this country. The sisters were noted for their beautiful voices and were called upon from near and far to sing at camp meetings. One brother remained in Germany, married, and became wealthy. He died leaving no heirs, learning too late, the family lost the wealth to the German government.
The sons having all gone on their own, Fredrick quit farming and moved into the town of Republic. In 1852, a man came to Republic taking dauerreatype pictures and Fredrick and Elizabeth had their picture taken. As old age crept upon him, he was troubled with shaking palsy and needed someone to care for him. His son, George, built an addition to his home near
Bloomville, Ohio. Fredrick moved his family which consisted of himself, his wife and two daughters into the home. There he spent the remainder of his days. He was a true Christian of the Methodist faith.
Some of Philip Rhoad's family were Solomon, Joseph, Johnathon, Elsie Beck, Margaret Smith, Katherine Stull, Angeline Carr, Mary Ann and Abraham.
John Rhoad lived west of what was known as the Coffman Church in Seneca County, Ohio.
Fredrick Rhoad, the third, married Anna Beck. Their children were Mary Rhoad Rhinhart Baird, Sarah Elizabeth Rhoad Simons, Lucy Ann Rhoad Allbaugh.
Magdalene Rhoad married John Hahn. They had one child, Wilbur Hahn.
Michael Rhoad married Susannah Beaver. Their children were Washington, Mary Rhoad Terratle, Joshua, and Lucinda Rhoad Gasser.
Joseph Rhoad married Lydia and their children were Edison, Almeda Rhoad Rolland, and Ida Rhoad Clark.
Susannah Rhoad Feighner's children were William, Augustus, Flora Feighner Klink, Frank, Sylvester, Jane Feigner Klink Boyde, and Emma Feighner Klink Leister.
John Rhoad and his first wife, Mary's children were William and Leroy. John and his second wife had Anna Rhoad Branderberry.
George Rhoad married Sarah Webster and their children were Samuel, Isaac, Jacob, Fredrick, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Joel, Obadiah, William, Henry and twins, Lucy and Lewis.
George died at the age of seventy- six years. Sarah died at the age of seventy-three years. Both died in the year of 1884 and were buried in the Baptist Cemetery on the Base Line Road south of Bloomville, Ohio.
Fredrick Rhoad, son of George and Sarah Webster Rhoad, married Catharine Miller. To his union were born Franklin, Ellen, Lucy and Ralph.
Franklin Rhoad married Laura Haller, daughter of John and Barbara Haller. Their children are Florence, Floyd, Rollie, Harvey, Coral and Clive.
In the early 1940's Franklin changed the name to Rhoads. They lived on a farm just south of the Shiloh Church near Delta, Ohio. There they raised their children. When they retired, they moved into Liberty Center where Franklin died shortly.
Florence Rhoads married Alfred Liest. They adopted Gladys. Gladys married Robert Demaline and they have three sons, Larry, James and Thomas.
Alfred, or Uncle Jud, delivered ice around Liberty Center for a while. Then he drove truck for the Pet Milk Company.
Floyd died in 1900 at the age of five years.
Rollie married Lola Overmeyer and their children were David "Milton", Duane, twins, Howard and Ward, and Rollin "Skip". Howard died just before his twenty-first birthday, and Lola died about a year after Skip was born.
Rollie worked on the construction of many of the roads in Henry County, coming home from work with his back sunburned so badly that when he took his shirt off the skin would come off. Rollie drove truck for the Pet Milk Company in Wauseon, Ohio. He would tell of coming back from trips out with the truck when the roads were so icy that motorists in cars were stranded, but he in his truck always got through. He started to work for Willys Overland before they changed to Kaiser Jeep and he retired from there about the time that the name changed to American Motors. His son, Ward, works there now.
Milton Rhoad married Neomi Junge and they had Darlene, Gary, Michael, and John. Darlene married James Reimund and they have Todd, Angie and Jodi. Gary married Doris Wagner and they had Deanna, died at seven months, Christopher, and Jason, died at three months. Michael married Jackie Gray and they have a son, Shannon.
Duane died at the age of six months.
Ward married Carol Gardner and they had Franklin and Ward, Jr. Franklin and his wife, Rose, had Richard and another son. Ward, Jr. and wife, Dianne, and Robert, and Adina who died at age of one month.
Skip married Francis Vanscoder and they had Dianna, Lola, Rollin, Jr., Connie, Sherry, Howard and Garrett. Francis already had her children, Frank, Linda, Gary and Faye Ann.
Rollie married Eva J. Sharp after the death of his wife, Lola. Rollie and Eva Rhoads' children are William, Sally, Barbara, Betty, Lila, and Terry.
William married Connie Beavers and they had Ed and Deb. Deb married Carl Roberts and they have Angelia.
Sally married Charles Hopple and they had Ted, Anita and Davilea. After their divorce, Sally married Cloyce Heckerman. He adopted her children and she adopted his Joyce, Leonard, David and John. Sally and Cloyce later had Leanna and Laurel. David and his wife, Cheryl, have David Jr., and Kenneth. Ted married Beth Ziss of Haskins, Ohio, and Anita married Michael McGarvey of Bellefontaine, Ohio. Davilea died at birth. Barbara married Arthur Burditt and had James and Roger. Betty married Robert Wenner and had Sally, Robert Jr., and Stephanie. Lila married Lawrence Schaupert and had Terry, Laura, Ward, Kenneth died at birth, and Cora.
Rollie's son, Terry, married Dorothy Pierce and adopted her daughter, Eileen, and had Brenda. After they were divorced, Terry married Sherry Schreiber, adopted her daughter, Juanita "Wendy", then they had Heidi and Dwayne.
Harvey Rhoads married Jessie Patton and they had Franklin, Violet, Bonnie, Maxine, Harold and Janet. Franklin died shortly after the birth of his twin daughters, Sharon and Karon. Violet married Newton Loer and their children are Darlene, Dennis, Kathy and Kristy. Bonnie married Harold Gibson and their children are Richard, Connie, Jacque, Janice, Wendy and Joy. Maxine married Donald Eichler and they had Franklin, Ronald, Peggy, Robin and Jill. Harold married Evelyn Krohn and they had Richard, Gary and Jodi. Janet married Dale Hill and they had Scott, Timothy and Darryl.
Coral married Charles Hudson. They had Virginia, Coral died soon after the age of eighteen years. Virginia married James Deblin and adopted Randy and Malinda.
