John Adam Rettig was born August 20, 1848 in Mitlechen Hessendimstadt, Germany. He came to America with his parents, Peter and Elizabeth Rettig, in 1860 at the age of 11. Arriving with him were two brothers, Lawerence and George, and two sisters, Gertrude (Rettig) Grube and Eva Mary (Rettig) Abele. A sister Elizabeth (Rettig) Sondergelt and a brother Nicolas were born in the United States of America.
After their arrival to America, they lived near Galion, Ohio. Later they moved to Flatrock Township where he was united in marriage to Anna Maria Reimund (the daughter of John and Eve Mary (Swin) Reimund. She had three brothers, John, George and Adam, and two sisters, Eve Mary and Catherine (Reimund) Franks. John was the only child born in Germany. John married Mary Diehlman from Fulton County in 1875, they had no children. George married Elizabeth Eberle in 1877, they had four sons, William, Danial, Henry and Edward, and two daughters, Annie (Reimund) Huddle and Cathryn (Reimund) Kurtz. Adam and Eve Mary both passed away young. Catherine married Danial Franks in 1880; they had five children, William, Ray, Arthur, Ernest, and a daughter Cora (Frank) Bish.
John and Anna Maria Rettig then moved to Monroe Township where he built their home place. He resided there fill his death.
To this union (John and Anna) were born seven sons and one daughter. Two of the sons died in infancy. Thelma (Rettig) Scheele was not in the picture. Emma Rettig did not marry. Martin married Bertha Rettig from Leesville, Ohio in 1954. Arthur married Margaret Hannah from Springfield, Ohio in 1909. They had four children, Claence, Thelma, Helen and Arthur. Henry married Laura Glantz from Napoleon, Ohio. They had two children, Herbert and Marilyn. Harmon married Dorthea Maria Leaders in 1911. This picture was taken at my Grandpa and Grandma Leaders home, which they built about four miles west of Holgate on Route 18 in 1899. They had fourteen children. Harmon and Dorthea Rettig had three children (Picture 6), left to right: is myself (Ruth), my Mother Dorthea, my Father Harmon, and my brothers Edward and Paul.
On June 4, 1938, I married Robert Dielman. We had three children, Bernard, Roberta and Ronald. Our family as it is now is shown in picture, left to right, back row: my son-in-law Larry Dirr, my husband Robert, my daughter-in-law Deborah (Schafer) Dielman, her husband Ronald, my daughter-in- law Florence (Junge) Dielman, her husband Bernard; front row: my mother-in-law Mary Dielman (92 years old at the time of the picture), granddaughters Amy Dirr and Jennifer Dielman and grandsons Mark Dielman, Tony Dirr and Matthew Dielman and my daughter Roberta (Dielman) Dirr.
