The Altman name was originally spelled Aultman and the name change came after the family came to Henry County, Ohio.
The Altman family came to Pickaway County, Ohio, in the early 1800's. Polly Aultman married Edward Edwards in Pickaway County on August 7, 1826. The ancestry of the family was Holland Dutch and the members of the family settled in Dutch communities that had been started in Ohio. They called themselves Pennsylvania Dutch and were members of the Lutheran faith.
Some of the family descendants think that the Edwards and Aultman families met in Pennsylvania in the late 1700's and traveled together when migrating to Ohio.
John and Martha Aultman resided in section ten, Jackson Township, Hancock County, Ohio. Their daughter, Mary, was born in 1812/13 and died in the fall of 1848. She married Samuel E. Edwards on September 22, 1832. John Aultman, Jr. was born in 1819. Elizabeth Altman married William Ward, had eleven children, and is buried in Hoy Cemetery. George Altman married Sarah Ward, daughter of William Ward, on June 3, 1861.
The Aultman family moved from Pickaway County in 1833 to Hancock County. Their descendants are residents of Henry County area.
