John Benien was born in 1842 in Germany. He came to Henry County in 1860 and taught school, having graduated while living in Germany and being prepared for school teaching there.
In 1869, he became Okolona post master. He served as the agent for the Wabash Railroad and U.S. Express Company at Okolona and was proprietor of a general store there.
