Harley Patterson's great-grandfather, Aaron, came to Ohio in 1808. He was a New Jersey farmer, and made the first permanent settlement in Wayne Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The first school in Wayne Township was built around 1825 on land donated for that purpose by Aaron Patterson. He wedded five wives in succession. His children were: John, who died in early manhood; William, who lived in Wayne Township; Uriah and Aaron, who moved to Pittsburgh, Pa.; Obadiah, who served the War of 1812, and then went West; Rachel (Hoagland), who returned to New Jersey; Hannah (Jennings), who moved West; Mary (Kint), who became a resident of Sugar Creek Township; and Jesse, who moved to Crawford County, Ohio.
Jesse, the grandfather of Harley, was born Nov. 16, 1800. He located in Crawford County, Ohio, in 1829. He purchased an undeveloped farm in Cranberry Township, Crawford County, Ohio, in 1837. His original log house was still standing in 1968 when it was torn down. Jesse Patterson married Sarah Landis on Sept. 5, 1826, in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Their children were: Jonathan, Henry, Barbara (Kinmont), Susannah (Weimer), Jesse, David, George, John, Amos, Sarah Jane (Mills), and Isaac. Jesse died March 15, 1886, after attaining the age of 85. His wife Sarah preceded him in death on Aug. 3, 1877.
Isaac Patterson, the father of Harley, was born Jan. 22, 1844, at the farm home in Cranberry Township, Crawford County. In 1862 while visiting his brother George in DeKalb Co., Indiana, he enlisted in the 23rd Independentant Battery, Indiana Volunteers. After a year's service, he returned to his father's home due to illness. Again in 1864 he re-enlisted in the Ohio Volunteers and served until the end of the Civil War. After the war he worked on farms in Ohio and Michigan. He came to Henry County and became acquainted with Mary Ann Rohrbaugh, a daughter of Lewis Rohrbaugh. They were married on April 7, 1870. Their children were Millard, Eugene, Lillian (Bond), Laura (Gauschi), and Harley.

Mrs. Sarah (Sadie) Patterson
Harley Patterson, son of Isaac, was born in Napoleon, Ohio, on May 12, 1884. He was a boilermaker, and was employed at the D.T. and I. Roundhouse at Napoleon. He married Sarah Christy, daughter of George and Maryetta Christy, and had two sons, Everett and Robert. In 1921 he died of pneumonia at the age of 37. His son Robert served during World War II in the 23rd Armored Engineer Battalion. His wife Sarah (Sadie) died in 1957.
