Barton Palmer was one of the very first settlers of Henry County. Barton apparently came to Ridgeville Corners about 1837. He operated a tavern at Ridgeville Corners. The tavern was a popular stopping place for early travelers through the area. Barton (b. March 7, 1798, Clifton Park, N.Y.) and his wife, Dorothy Nichols (b. May 27, 1802, New Hampshire) were married December 21, 1821, in New York prior to coming to Henry County.
Their children were as follows: Frances Augustus (Frank), Edwin N., Sarah Cordelia, David Henry, John 0., Charles B., 3 died in infancy, and an adopted daughter, Emily Eugenia.
Barton died March 6, 1853, at Ridgeville Corners and Dorothy died November 27, 1885, at Napoleon. Their daughter, Sarah Cordelia Palmer (b. October 17, 1825, Greenville, New York) married Joseph A. Stout February 12, 1 84 6, and their family is sketched in another part of this book.
The children of Barton and his wife apparently made their homes in the Henry County area. Barton and Dorothy Palmer and several of their children, and Mrs. Palmer's mother are buried in the Locust Cemetery at Ridgeville Corners. Several members of the family are buried in Forest Park Cemetery at Napoleon. No doubt, some descendants are still in Henry County area.
There is a very good book on the Palmer Families in America compiled and arranged by Hon. Horace Wilbur Palmer, edited by Nellie Morse Palmer (Mrs. Palmer) and published by Neshanie Printing Company, Neshanie, N.J., 1966.
