Raymond Oberhaus is the son of Frederick and Sarah (Oberhaus) Oberhaus of Liberty Township, Napoleon, Ohio. Raymond was born December 20, 1917. His father was a carpenter and his mother a school teacher before her marriage. Raymond attended the Bell Country School about one mile from his home. He served as janitor for several years. He did not attend high school as a brother had passed away in 1927 and then the mother passed away in 1928 and finances were very low.
On August 4, 1940 he married Lorena Baden, daughter of Albert and Alvina (Meyer) Baden of Pleasant Township, Holgate. Her grandparents were Fred and Anna Baden of Hamler and Fred and Marie (Bunke) Meyer of Holgate. Lorena was born December 11, 1920 in Pleasant Township. At that time her parents resided on Road 17, two miles south of Rt. 18 on the Dietrich Cordes farm. The family moved one mile north to the Fred Meyer or former Dick Bunke farm when Lorena was eight years old. She then attended Kelly School one mile west of the home place until she entered Holgate High School. Her elementary teachers were Mabel Pfau Rowe, Inez Drackert, Dorothea Poetzinger Desgrange and Norma Haase Richards. Lorena graduated in 1938 from Holgate as president and valedictorian of her class.
After their marriage Raymond and Lorena first resided on Cherry Street in Holgate, later moving to a farm west of Pleasant Bend. In 1951 they purchased the forty acre farm in the southwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 22 in Flatrock Township. In 1961 they built a cage laying house which presently houses 8000 laying hens. In 1966 they built a new house on the southwest corner of their farm. Raymond has worked at Lectrolite, now Dresser Industries, since 1958. He served many years on the church council of St. John Lutheran Church, Holgate, Ohio. Lorena has taught Sunday School for nearly thirty years and has been active in local church societies, zone officer and Ohio District LWML committees, also in school and community affairs.
Raymond and Lorena are the parents of five sons: Paul born September 18, 1941; Harold born July 6, 1944; Luther born December 3, 1947; James born September 11, 1952 and Jerry born October 25, 1961. The children have all attended Holgate Local School thus far and Jerry, the youngest is a Junior there and will graduate in 1979. He has been active as athletic trainer at Holgate, awarded two FFA Camp Scholarships and at present is vice- president of the Holgate FFA chapter and treasurer of the Class of 1979. He has attended the Lutheran Laymen's League Youth Retreat for the last three years. He worked for Clifton B. Oedy, contractor, the last summer.
Paul graduated from Holgate High School in 1959 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in January of 1963 and began teaching at Deshler immediately and then at Patrick Henry. For the last five years he has been teaching part time at Defiance College. He married Sharon Carr, daughter of Gerald and Stella Carr of Defiance on September 22, 1963. They have resided on his parents' farm since their marriage. At first they lived in a trailer home west of the family residence and when Raymond and Lorena built a new home, Paul and Sharon moved into the family home. In 1974 they built a new home east of the family home. They are the parents of three children: Brian* born September 7, 1964; Angela born July 11, 1967; and Susan born November 12, 1969. Paul also received his Masters Degree from Bowling Green University-. Paul and Sharon are both active in church affairs at St. John Lutheran, Holgate, and also school and local activities.
Harold graduated from Holgate High School in 1962 and then from Stautzenberger Business College of Toledo. He did accounting in the PAG office in Bowling Green and then in the bank. Hoping to get back on the farm, Harold is presently doing accounting for some small firms, doing custom combining and working on the farm for another farmer. Harold married a classmate, Shirley Eis, daughter of Calvin and Betty Eis. They moved to the Grand Rapids area in 1965. Shirley graduated from Bowling Green
State University in 1965 and has been teaching math in the Bowling Green Junior High. They are active in their church, St. Mark Lutheran, Bowling Green. They are the parents of Joy born May 28, 1970 and Roy born February 18, 1973.
Luther graduated from Holgate High School in 1965 and from Bowling Green State University in 1969 receiving his degree in vocal music. He taught vocal music until 1974. Luther married Cynthia Henry of Warren, Ohio on May 25, 1969. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Henry of Warren, Ohio. They have two children Geoffrey born December 15, 1969 and Robin born February 12, 1973. Three years ago they purchased a small grocery store with living quarters in the rear, in the little town of Florence, Ohio. Luther still does substitute teaching in the area schools but he and his wife operate the store with some outside help. They have had foster children for some years. Marjorie Werner came to them in March of 1975 and graduated from high school in June of 1977. ?She has been a big help in the store and to the family. Luther has been choir director and held many other offices at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Sandusky. Cindy has taught Sunday School, sung in choir and played for services at times.
James Oberhaus graduated from Holgate High School in 1970. He served as NW Sectional Vice President of the FFA in his senior year. He graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1974 with a degree in vocal music. James married a classmate, Patricia Diemer, daughter of Norman and Betty Diemer of Holgate. Jim and Pat live in the old homestead where his parents resided when he was born. They have one daughter Kimberly born October 1, 1975. James has been teaching at Patrick Henry since graduation. They have both been active in the Maumee Valley Summer Theatre productions at Napoleon the last two years. They have both been active in their church at St. John Lutheran, Holgate and also in Alumni affairs of Holgate High School. Jim has been working for Clifton B. Oedy for the last ten years.
