Joseph Newton, born June 24, 1828, in Longford County, Ireland, came to America in 1838 to Ashtabula County, Ohio. He worked his way over on a boat at the age of ten years. He was the only one of his family to come to America.
He migrated to Ohio and in 1857, he married Mary Collins. They moved to Hamler, Ohio, then later to Fort Wayne, Indiana in about 1910 or 1911. They were the parents of seven children: Min, Emma, Sadie, Anna, Frank, Joe, and John who was the youngest child.
For years John and Amelia lived near Hamler. He was a mail carrier for years then left to work for the Ottawa Sugar Beet Company as a field man. He owned eighty acres of land three miles south of Hamler, now owned by Bill Gluss and family.
Many happy and sad memories are in the minds of many people who visited the Newton family. Tragedy first struck in the home when Lucy Blue was a hired girl for them. A son, Harold Newton, was born in 1908 and died at the age of two days, and is buried in the Catholic Church Cemetery. While Lucy worked in the home, Vadise got into some mischief and Mrs. Newton made Lucy give Vadise a licking. Lucy never forgot it and always said it was the hardest thing she ever had to do for she loved children. On December 27, 1933, tragedy struck again. Their son, Fremont (Soup) Newton was killed in a car and train accident with Riley Blue, son of Lucy Blue, at Ottawa, Ohio.
One of the things remembered by Edna Blue Grant was when Effie and Alvie Erford came to the Newton home and the women liked to "warp" the men at playing pinochle. If you heard yelling, you knew the women had won the card game.
One Sunday morning, the family and Edna Blue Grant, who had stayed all night, arose, they got in the big Buick and went to church. Agnes, or Bobby, as everyone called her, said, "Now at breakfast this morning, listen to Dad's prayer". John Newton always asked the blessing. At the end of the blessing, John said, "Name of the father, son and the holy ghost, Amen, and Raymond where were you until four o'clock this morning?" Raymond had a habit of staying out late.
Pete and Soup had an old Buick touring car and in the summer time one could hear the boys start out from home. They "put it to the floor" between each shift, and had no muffler.
