James Edward Nagel was born October 5, 1939, in Henry County, Ohio, and was the son of Edward Emanuel, born February 4, 1901, and died September 26, 1963, and Luetta Emma (Vorwerk) born March 22, 1905. He was raised on the Nagel homestead farm in Ridgeville Township, County Road U., and was baptized by Reverend Kueckeburg and confirmed by Reverend Hahn at St. John's Lutheran Church, R. #1, Stryker. He attended grade and graduated at Ridgeville High School in May, 1957. James graduated in May, 1963, from Defiance College,
Defiance, Ohio, with a B.S. in education, and completed his M.S. in education at St. Cloud State College, St. Cloud, Minnesota, in July, 1966. James received his Doctorate in education in May of 1973 from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota.
On July 25, 1965, James married Barbara Karen Damman, born August 27, 1942, in Henry County, Ohio, daughter of Henry Fred Damman born July 20, 1917, and Alma Anna Wilhelmina Tietje Damman, born November 27, 1919. Presiding at the ceremony was Reverend Koehler of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Hamler, Ohio. Barbara was raised on the family farm, 1 mile south of Hamler on State Route 109. She was baptized by Reverend Maassel in St. John's Lutheran Church, Freedom Township, and confirmed by Reverend Koehler in St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Hamler. She graduated from Hamler High School in May of 1960, and attended Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. In 1962, Barbara graduated from Warner's Beauty College, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
This marriage has been blessed with two sons: Christopher James, born June 6, 1967, and Charles Edward, born November 11, 1969. Christopher has completed the 2nd grade at St. Paul's Lutheran Church School, Napoleon, Ohio. Charles finished nursery school at St. Paul Methodist Church under the direction of Mrs. Church. Christopher was baptized by Reverend Laabs and Charles by Reverend Weber, both at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Napoleon, Ohio.
James was employed in farming and plastering prior to attending college. He taught and held administrative positions at Defiance High School, 1964-65; St. Cloud State College, 196364 and 1965-66; Bowling Green State University, 1966-67; University of North Dakota, 1967-68 and 1972-73; Northwest Technical College, 19681972 and 1973 to the present.
Barbara operated her own Cameo Beauty Shop in downtown Hamler from 1963 to 1965. Since 1965 she has devoted her time to caring for the home and children. The Nagel's currently reside in their new cedar home at R# 4, Box 28-C on County Road 17, 1/2 mile north of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Napoleon Township.
