Motter Families

George Motter was born in 1798 in Pennsylvania, married Susannah, born 1803, in Pennsylvania, and had George, born 1850, Joseph, born 1840, and Catharine, born 1839, in Germany.

On some records Sally Motter is referred to as Sally Lettick and it is thought, without written verification, that she married twice, first to a Let- tick, brother of Simon and George Let- tick, and was a daughter-in-law of Peter and Catharine Lettick. Other records list her as Sally Motter who married David Stickler.

Some records list Joseph George Motter as being born in 1798 at Greencastle, Pennsylvania, and married to Susannah Gehrett there. Susan was born at Greencastle. Joseph's death certificate lists him only as Joseph Motter. His son, George Washington Motter, died in 1890, and the obituary gives his father as George Motter. Family tradition states that Joseph George was the son of George Joseph Motter of Maryland but vertification has not been traced.

The Motter families of Wayne County, Ohio, Ashland County, Ohio, Defiance County, and Williams County, Ohio, are all branches of the same family. Samuel, John, and Peter Motter were married and lived in Wayne and Ashland Counties in 1830, and it is thought that the Motter family of Henry County came from Pennsylvania to their homes, then came to Henry County.
