Dr. Thomas F. Moriarty, Jr. was born in Danbury, Connecticut, on Aug. 11, 1926, the son of Thomas F. Moriarty, Sr. and Julia T. (Dunlevy) Moriarty. Thomas Moriarty, Sr. was one of twelve children born to Thomas Moriarty and Julia (Kirby) Moriarty. He was born in Willimantic, Conn. His father came to this country from County Kerry, Ireland, during the potato famine. His mother, who was of Irish ancestry, was born in New Brunswick, Canada.
Julia T. Moriarty was born in South Windham, Conn., one of five children of Patrick Dunlevy and Julia (Donovan) Dunlevy. Both of her parents were born in County Kerry, Ireland, in the 19th Century.
Dr. Moriarty had one brother, Paul, who died in infancy.
Dr. Moriarty received a Bachelor of Science degree from Holy Cross College, Worchester, Mass., and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Louisville in Kentucky. He and his parents came to Napoleon, Ohio, to set up an office for the practice of surgery on Nov. 11, 1958. Doctor's mother passed away in March of 1962. His father, a retired funeral director, is still living with Dr. Moriarty and his family in Napoleon.
While a surgical resident at MercyHospital in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Moriarty met Alice Herman who was serving as a head nurse there. Alice received her R.N. status in 1955 after graduating from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.
Alice and Tom were married Sept. 26, 1959. Alice was born in Holgate, Henry Co., Ohio, on Jan. 3, 1935, one of seven children born to Leonard Herman and Cecilia (Long) Herman. A brother, Edward, died in infancy.
Leonard was born in Defiance Co., Ohio, in 1900 to George X. Herman and Clara (Batt) Herman. His grandparents migrated from Germany in the 1840's. Now retired from farming, Leonard and Cecilia, better known as Cecil, live in Edgerton, Ohio.
Cecil was born in 1904 to William Long and Margaret (Collins) Long in Hamler, Henry Co., Ohio. William Long was born in 1867 on a canal boat on the Miami-Erie Canal in Henry Co., Ohio to George Long and Ellen (Lowery) Long of Henry Co. His wife, Margaret, was also born in 1867 in Henry Co. to Michael Collins and Bridget (Shehe) Collins who migrated to the United States from Ireland in the 1830's.
The marriage of Alice and Thomas Moriarty has produced four children: Kathleen Theresa (1960), Thomas Francis III (1962), Sheila Marie (1964), and Sean Michael (1973).
Dr. Moriarty has practiced surgery in Napoleon for the past seventeen years and is now completing his final term as Mayor of Napoleon. He has served a total of eight years in public office, one term as councilman and three terms as Mayor.
Alice Moriarty R.N. worked in her husband's office as his nurse until Kathleen was born. She has been active in many civic organizations in Napoleon and currently holds a national office as president-elect of the Woman's Auxiliary to the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons.
Kathy, Tom, and Sheila are all active participants in various sports.
