Herbert L. Beilharz was born July 27, 1879 in Liberty Township, Henry County, Ohio, the eldest son of Frank E. and Emma (Hales) Beilharz. He had two brothers, Louis and Roy.
He spent most of his life as a farmer on the farm 2 miles north and 1/2 mile east of Liberty Center, Ohio on road V. The farm being in the Beilharz family from 1867 to 1973. On April 3, 1973 it was sold to John W. Miller. Herbert passed away on January 4, 1974 at age 94.
The farm was bought from the State of Ohio by Micah Chamberlain Oct. 13, 1852; was sold to Franklin Murray April 1, 1854, then sold to Lewis E. Beilharz (grandfather of Herbert) July 26, 1867. Frank E. acquired it in 1882. Herbert acquired 55 acres from Frank E. and Emma Beilharz in 1918. In 1929 Herbert bought 85 acres from Louis V. Beilharz.
Herbert was very active in civic affairs. He was manager of the Farmers Mutual Telephone Co. many years, served on the board of The Liberty Center Grain & Stock Co., was secretary of Knights of Pythias over 45 years, was a member of The Ancient Order of Gleaner over 60 years, and was a member of Liberty Center United Methodist Church.
On December 23, 1901 he married Lillian M. Russell, who passed away Nov. 7, 1965. They had 6 children, Norris E., born Jan. 1, 1904; E. Lucille, born Oct. 31, 1907; Virgil V., born Aug. 5, 1909. Three girls died in infancy.
Herbert attended Reed School 11/2 mile west of the farm on road V. All 3 children attended the same school through the eighth grade and graduated from Liberty Center High School.
On May 29, 1935, Norris married Mae Smith of Wauseon, Ohio, born Dec. 29, 1914. She has operated a beauty shop for 44 years to this date, at their home on 378 Maple St., Liberty Center, Ohio.
Norris worked in Toledo several years. In March 1959, he built and operated the Redwood Dairy Bar on the corner of Maple and Damascus Sts., Liberty Center, Ohio. In 1968 he sold it to Belva Daum and Eloise Dierker, when he retired. On Nov. 5, 1975 he passed away.
They had (2) sons - Kenneth L., born April 13, 1937, Terry E., born Jan. 17, 1939.
Kenneth attended Toledo University and Defiance College. He is an accountant for Marathon Oil Co., Findlay, Ohio. He married Mary Riggs on Jan. 19, 1957. They have 2 children, Bradley, born March 15, 1959, Brenda, born March 23, 1962. They live on a farm near Van Buren, Ohio.
Terry graduated from the University of Cincinnati in the College of Architecture on June 9, 1963. He has his own business in Defiance, Ohio "Pastor & Beilharz". On June 27, 1959 he married Kay Overmier and they have 4 children; Kelly, born April 20, 1961; Kraig, born Jan. 13, 1963; Kara, born Dec. 13, 1964; Kent, born Feb. 2, 1972.
On June 17, 1931 Lucille married Dahrel Crum. She worked a few years for the Mutual Telephone Co., then 9 years as bookkeeper at the Liberty Elevator.
In Jan. 1961 Dahrel and Lucille bought the Liberty Hardware from Ray Wangrin. They are now retiring, having sold the Hardware to Gareld Spiess of Liberty Center, Ohio.
Lucille and Dahrel live on Pleasant View Dr. in their home they built in 1968.
They had 2 children, Darilynn L. born Jan. 15, 1938; Ronald E. born March 11, 1939.
Darilynn married Fred Whittemore of Seattle, Wash. on March 22, 1958. Fred received a degree in mechanical engineering from Tri-State University, Angola, Ind. They have 3 sons; Mark, born Oct. 16, 1959; Kirk, born May 4, 1962; Kent, born June 13, 1964. They live in Vandalia, Ohio.
Ronald graduated from the University of Cincinnati in the College of Architecture on June 9, 1963, and works in Toledo, Ohio for Britch, Posler, & Lubeck Architects. On Jan. 20, 1962 he married Marilyn Wolf of Cincinnati, Ohio, who is a nurse service supervisor at St. Lukes Hospital in Maumee, Ohio. They have 2 children; Scott, born Sept. 29, 1962; Lisa, born May 23, 1964. They live in rural Waterville, Ohio.
On Nov. 8, 1930, Virgil married V. Gladine Wagoner of Toledo, Ohio. They have 3 sons; James Virgil, born Oct. 12, 1931; William Lee, born May 11, 1937; Clark Herbert, born March 9, 1942.
James went to the University of Illinois for 2 years studying pre-med. Then he went into the service of the U.S. Navy where he received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. On Feb. 12, 1955 he married Jean Rae Schroeder. They now live in Riverview, Fla. They have 5 children and one granddaughter; Linda Sue, born Dec. 12, 1955. She is married to
Barry L. Hammons; they have one daughter, Allison Kay, born Oct. 10, 1974. They live in Fort Worth, Texas. Lawrence Lee, born Mar. 18, 1957; Bruce James, born Sept. 23, 1963; Bonnie Jo, born July 22, 1967; Kari Rae, born Aug. 25, 1971. William Lee also was in the service of the U.S. Navy, then several years in the Naval Reserve. He took his schooling in electronic data processing and earned his certification as an EDP. On Aug. 30, 1957 he married Sharon L. Sandstrom. They have one son, William L. Jr., born Feb. 3, 1965. They all live in Minnesota.
Clark Herbert, graduated from Tri-State University at Angola, Ind. with a certificate of design engineering. He did his service duty in the U.S. Air Force and several years in the Air National Guard. He is now employed at Ft. Wayne, Ind. for a large electronics company, as a supervisor of designing. On Aug. 20, 1966, he married Carol Sue Bichan of Hamler, Ohio. They have 2 children, Cory Bichan, born Dec. 23, 1972; Christy Rae, born Mar. 15, 1976. Carol was a PE instructor and a student counselor in the New Haven School District. They are living at Grabill, Indiana.

German family of commoners of the 15th century, originating from the Province of Hessen—Nassau. Ancestors of this family participated bravely and courageously in the Crusades of the 12th and 13th centuries.
In 1712, the carriage builder and smith Wilhelm Emanuel BEILHARZ was awarded the family seal and the great charter of coat of arms in parchment for his merits and work done for the Hessian Electorate.
New constructions designed by W.E. Beilharz resulted in improved coaches and carriages; he built coaches for many kings and princes. Furthermore W.E. Beilharz was known as a good farrier, and he shoed many horses. For these merits W.E. Beilharz was honored and decorated by the reigning dynasty.
Members of this family emigrated to other German provinces and others emigrated to Austria, Alsace-Lorraine, Holland and America.
