David Sloan Mires loved the reading, writing, and ciphering of his Damascus school days, and made use of all his acquired knowledge when in 1886 he had an opportunity to purchase a half interest in the Liberty Center Press, which the Reverend J. L. Bushbridge had established in 1881.
The pastor, Methodist, moved on, selling the paper in August, 1882, to N. W. Emery. Then in rapid changes, Emery to J. H. Russell, to J. H. Smith and D. S. Mires, the Press became a part of the Mires family - and stayed there for sixty years.
David's younger brother, Eugene, assisted him in the weekly publication for several years, chiefly with writing articles. In 1903 David and his brother John became the "Mires Brothers, Publishers," and in the late 1920's David sold his interest and took to his new hobby, golf, and his old hobby, fishing.
Especially interested in the theatre, he was one of the early sponsors and patrons of the traveling companies who performed at the Citizen's Opera House, and when he visited in Columbus he tried to catch up on the new productions.
