Arthur Theodore Michaelis was born to Fred Michaelis and Henrietta Sonnenberg Michaelis on October 10, 1913. He was the grandson of Fred Michaelis and Katherine Eickhoff Michaelis.
Arthur's father, Fred Michaelis, came to America when he was five years old, and lived in Monroe Township, Henry County, Ohio. He married Henrietta Sonnenberg whose father, Henry Sonnenberg, was born in Kirchspiel, Hanover, Germany. Henry came to America in 1866 when he was twenty three years old. Henry married Eliza Ludeman in 1876. Henrietta was one of eleven children. The Henry Sonnenberg family lived in Monroe Township.
Fred and Henrietta Sonnenberg Michaelis had eleven children, ten of them are still living. These children of Fred and Henrietta are Bernhard, Alfred, Theodore, Arthur, Emma, Olga, Erwin, Lawrence, Frederick and Rozella.
Arthur Theodore Michaelis spent most of his childhood near Hamler, Ohio. He married Ethel Rettig on February 29, 1936. Arthur and Ethel reside in Napoleon, Ohio.
Ethel Rettig, the oldest child of Jul ius L. and Eva Caroline Rettig Rettig, was born on August 8, 1917.
Eva, or Callie as everyone called her, was born on August 1, 1895, to Reuben and Neti Rettig, and a grand daughter of Ludwig and Elizabetha Rettig Scheuerle. Ludwig and Elizabetha were parents of seven children: Jacob, Pet- ter, John, Marin, Neti, Adam, and George David.
Neti Scheuerle married Reuben Rettig and their children were Della and twins, Nora and Eva, or Callie, Rettig. Callie married Julius L. Rettig.
Julius L. Rettig was born on May 19, 1892 and was the son of Lawrence and Catherine Huber Rettig, and the grand son of Charles and Catherina- Schmidt Huber.
Charles Huber, born in Welchbach, Bavaria, Germany on May 8, 1825, came to America at the age of eighteen years. He was the son of Charles Huber who was born in Byron, Germany about 1796, and came to America and lived with his son, Charles, in approximately 1860. His wife, Catherina Schmidt, born in Wislock, Baden, Germany, on January 16, 1830, came to America at the age of fifteen years. Charles and Catherina were married and lived near Marion, Ohio, and later came to Monroe Township, Henry County, Ohio.
Catherine Huber, daughter of Charles and Catherina Schmidt Huber, was born on February 25, 1853. She married- Lawrence Rettig who was born in 1844. Lawrence and Catherine Huber Rettig had nine children: Charles, John, Joseph, Anna, Daniel, Martha, Clara, Milton, and Julius.
Julius L. and Callie Rettig Rettig were the parents of five children. A son died in infancy. The other children were Ethel Martha, Gladys Rettig Elling, now deceased, Ruby Rettig Wolf Stevens, and Harrison Rettig. The family of Julius L. Rettig grew up in Henry County near Holgate, Ohio.
Arthur and Ethel Rettig Michaelis had one child, Carolyn Henrietta. Carolyn was born near Holgate on July 10, 1937, and spent all of her childhood in Henry County.
Carolyn Michaelis married Terry Rice in October, 1957. Terry was from Grelton, Ohio. They had two boys, Rick Alan, born on September 18, 1958, and Scott Lynn, born on February 14, 1963. Carolyn and Terry were divorced in 1964.
On March 23, 1968, Carolyn married David Arthur Slyder. David moved to Napoleon, Ohio from Tipton, Indiana after their marriage. Carolyn, David, Rick, and Scott are now residing near Florida, Ohio.
