The George A. Beck Family

The genealogy of the Beck family has been traced to Sursee, Canton of Luzern, Switzerland. In 1960, Karl Beck, (who at 84 yrs. is still living on the old Beck home known as "Beckenhof" in Sursee, Switzerland) published a genealogy of all the descendants of Jakob Beck (b. 1522) m. Elisabeth Schnyder. This book lists approximately 2300 descendants of Jakob Beck including the American branch of the family. Many of the family were prominent in the government and the Roman Catholic Church in Switzerland. Succeeding generations were Casper (b. 1546). Hans Kleinhans Beck (b. 1571 d. 1641). Jakob Beck (b. 1596 d. 1628) m. Maria Acherman on July 12, 1620. Johan Beck (b. June 4, 1621) m. Elisabeth von Esch. Johan Beck (b. Feb. 23, 1654 d. July 7, 1708) m. Sibilla Wagemann on Sept. 13, 1683. Johan Beck (b. Apr. 21, 1693 d. Sept. 28, 1733) m. Anna Maria Kaufmann on Jan. 24, 1713. Xaveri Beck (b. Mar. 23, 1716 d. Sept. 7, 1798) m. Maria Katharina Meyer (b. Nov. 26, 1723 d. Sept. 23, 1768) on Jan. 24, 1746. Andreas Beck (b. July 5, 1747 d. Apr. 10, 1835) m. Anna Maria Bucher on May 20, 1776. Franz Andreas Josef Beck (b. July 17, 1787 d. Mar. 3, 1866) m. Anna Maria Barbara Raber (b. May 20, 1792 d. Nov. 10, 1854) on July 23, 1810. He was a copper and goldsmith and came to Ottawa Co., Ohio in 1856. His son Markus Jost (known here as Josef) (b. Dec. 15, 1822 d. 1908) had arrived in Ottawa Co. in 1849, seven years previous to his father, and purchased a farm near Elmore, Ohio where he spent the rest of his life with his wife Elisabeth Widmer (b. 1827 d. 1909). Most of his brothers and sisters came to the United States between 1849 and 1856. Many of his descendants still live in the Ottawa and Sandusky Co. area, although members of the family are scattered from coast to coast.

The oldest son of Josef, George A. (b. Dec. 7, 1861 d. Aug. 28, 1934) m. Louisa Oberhaus (b. Feb. 17, 1865 d. July 9, 1942) who was born near Napoleon and at the age of six moved with her parents to a farm near Pemberville. Shortly after their marriage George and Louisa moved to the Oberhaus farm in Sec. 3 of Napoleon Twp. Later they moved to a farm in Section 10 of Napoleon Twp. on U.S. Route 6. They spent the rest of their lives on this farm. Their four children were: Ida (b. Apr. 9, 1886 d. Dec. 19, 1930) m. Harry Bartley, they had three children Leona, George and John.

Fred (b. Feb. 3, 1889 d. Aug. 21, 1950) m. Grace Veigel (b. Nov. 23, 1892) on June 2, 1917. In 1921 they purchased 146 acres in Sec. 4 of Liberty Twp. In 1927 they sold 94 acres of the original farm and purchased 51 acres adjoining the 52 acres and moved to the site of the present farm house on Co. Rd. 10. They lived there until his death. This farm is still in the family owned by their daughter Bernadine and her husband Donald Drummond. Fred and Grace had six children.

Harold (b. Feb. 3, 1904 Mar. 2, 1973) m. Mae Gordon (b. Oct. 11, 1908) on Feb. 3, 1929. Harold and Mae had three children.

Vernice (b. Apr. 8, 1907) now living in Napoleon. The children of Fred and Grace Beck:

Loren L. (b. Apr. 29, 1918) m. Louella A. Damman (b. Mar. 29, 1923) of Napoleon on June 29, 1946. They presently live at Gibsonburg, Ohio. Five children.

Vernon C. (b. Aug. 27, 1919 d. May 10, 1944) died in a crash of U.S. Navy plane while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Loretta I. (b. Oct. 28, 1922) m. Henry F. Zumfelde (b. July 6, 1918) of Wauseon, Ohio on Oct. 26, 1941. Theyhave lived on the Zumfelde farm at Wauseon, Ohio since their marriage. Six children.

Bernadine K. (b. Sept. 4, 1929) m. Donald Drummond (b. Apr. 2, 1929) of near Delta, Ohio on Aug. 15, 1948. They purchased the Fred Beck farm in Sec. 4 of Liberty Twp. in 1962. Four children.

Norman T. (b. Mar. 5, 1937) m. Jaclyn Jensen (b. Dec. 29, 1939) of New?

ington, Conn. on Oct. 4, 1958. They now live in Escondido, Calif. Three children.

The children of Harold and Mae Beck:
Bette (b. June 1, 1927) m. William F. Armstrong (b. Mar. 8, 1926) on Oct.

21, 1948. Three children. Divorced Feb. 14, 1966. On Aug. 18, 1966 Bette then married Dale E. Knott (b. Sept. 27, 1921). They now reside in Marion, Ind.

Robert (b. July 8, 1932) m. Frances May Armitage (b. May 18, 1932) on July 21, 1956. Now living on Co. Road M. in Henry Co. Four children.

Lee (b. Apr. 9, 1934) m. Patsy Houts (b. March 15, 1934) on Jan. 16, 1954. Lee was in an accident in 1969 and remains in a coma. Their home is State Route 24 near Liberty Center. Four children.

La Nette Jo (b. Mar. 29, 1947) m. Terry D. Beaverson (b. July 31, 1946) on Dec. 28, 1967. Two children: Sheena K. (b. Dec. 28, 1968) and Erin         N. (b. Dec. 26, 1974).

Damon V. (b. Aug. 31, 1949) m. Cindi Overbeck (b. Sept. 25, 1949) on Jan. 11, 1971. One child: Colby D. (b. Aug. 2, 1971).
