Peter Mangas who was born in 1825 in Prussia, came to America in 1837 and settled in Pleasant Township, Henry County, Ohio. He had nine children, all boys. One of his sons was Andrew.
Andrew Mangas married Frances Clemons and settled in Defiance County, Ohio. They had five boys and two girls.
Their son, Richard Mangas, married Margaret Zimmerman and had four children—John Mangas, Van Wert, Ohio; Norbert Mangas, Rt. 2, Defiance Ohio; Mrs. John (Mary) Seibert, Rt. 7, Defiance, Ohio; and Ambrose Man- gas, Rt. 1, New Bavaria, Ohio.
After Richard's wife, Margaret Zimmerman Mangas, died in 1941, Richard married Coletta Kinstle in 1954. Richard died in March, 1963. Coletta Mangas lives at Rt. 1, New Bavaria, Ohio. Ambrose Mangas is the only great grand-child of Peter Mangas living in Pleasant Township, Henry County, Ohio.
Ambrose married Mary Giesige in 1958. Her parents are Valois and Loretta Ritz Giesige of Rt. 1, New Bavaria. Mary was one of twelve children, and had eight brothers and three sisters. The Giesige family were: Bernadette who married Ronald Jones, New Bavaria; Bernadine who married Ralph Haselman and lives at Leipsic, Ohio; Sandra married Louie Noirot; Paul, Kalida, Ohio; Ronald, Sherwood, Ohio; Norman, Oakwood, Ohio; Nelson, Rt. 7, Defiance, Ohio; Leo, Valois, Jr., Steve and Rodney of Rt. 1, New Bavaria, Ohio. Giesige celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary in March, 1976.
Ambrose Mangas was born February 23, 1934. He attended Ayersville High School and graduated in 1953. He served two years in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and served a year and a half in Germany. His present employment is as a truck driver for Dinner Bell Foods and has worked there for twenty-five years. He also owns and farms sixty acres of land that he purchased in 1961 from Charles Din. He is post quartermaster of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8847 and is a life member of the organization. He served ten years as president and secretary-treasurer of Eckert's Recreation Club. He is a councilman for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria. He and his family are members of the church. Ambrose was a volunteer coaching baseball and basketball for many years.
Mary Mangas was born November 16, 1939 and graduated from Holgate High School in 1957. She works part time at El-Khoure's Bestmark grocery store as a cashier. She is a member, and past officer, in the V.F.W. Post 8847 Auxilary. She is serving her sixth year as captain of Pleasant Township Cancer Crusade. Mary is also a member of the Rosary Altar Society of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She has served as vice-president and is now president of the society in 1978.
The three children of Ambrose and Mary are Daniel, age 17 years; Diane, age 15 years; and Douglas, age 12 years. All three children attended Holgate Junior High and Holgate High School.
Daniel was born on June 17, 1959 and is active in many athletic activities (baseball, basketball, cross country), and also is active in many clubs. He enjoys coaching smaller children. He graduated in May, 1977 and planned to go to college and major in business management.
Diane is active in F.H.A. and is a majorette in the high school band. She enjoys basketball and volleyball. She was born on August 23, 1961.
Douglas is a seventh grader and a class officer. He is in the junior high mixed chorus and plays football and basketball on the junior high teams. He was born July 7, 1964.
The Mangas family live in the home they built in 1962 on State Route 108, four miles south of Holgate.
