Noah Long was born bout 1760 in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, and was brought as a child to Southwestern Pennsylvania where he grew up in Monongahela Township, of now Greene County. He married, sometime between 1781 and 1784, Sarah Gapen who was born on October 6, 1766 in New Jersey to Zachariah and Ruth Tindall Gapen. Zachariah was born on August 10, 1733 in New Jersey and died in March, 1812, in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Ruth was born September 8, 1740 in New Jersey and died in Pennsylvania. They were married on July 7, 1760, it is thought near Princeton, New Jersey. They then lived several years in Frederick County, Virginia. 1766 is thought to have been the year when Zachariah moved his family west of the Monongahela River into what is now southwestern Pennsylvania. The name is sometimes spelled "Gobean" and it presumed to have been French Huguenot. Zachariah Gapen belonged to the "Westland Meeting" of the Society of Friends, or Quakers. Zachariah's oldest son, Stephen Gapen, was a Captain of the Militia, and later active in the formation of Greene county in 1796, becoming it's first county surveyor. Sarah is named as Sarah Long in Zachariah Gapen's will.
Noah Long must have been well liked for from this time forward a sprinkling of first name "Noah's" appear among the Long and area families. The Census of 1790 lists Noah and his wife with three boys.
By 1800 the John and Ann Long descendants lived either in Dunkard Township of Greene County or in Monongahela Township. It is not known just when Noah's mother, Ann H. Long, died.
Noah, David, and Gideon Long (son of David) came to Butler County, Ohio, before 1805. Deeds show that David Long was the first owner of section number twenty. Butler County was formed in 1803 from land of Hamilton County, Ohio. It is thought that Noah and David, Sr. went together down the Ohio river to Butler County. Noah did not sell his farm, "The Ark", until 1808.
Apparently Noah Long died in 1815 in Butler County, Ohio, and left no will or recorded estate records. He had one hundred and fifty acres of land which he had purchased on December 20, 1813 from his brother, David, plus a farm bought in 1813 from Thomas Powers.
After Noah's death, Sarah Gapen Long married George Kelly on June 16, 1816, in Butler County, Ohio. George Kelly died about September, 1830 and apparently left no children from his marriage to Sarah. In 1850, Sarah was living with Elias Long and was then aged eighty-four years, and she must have died a short time later.
