John A. Knipp purchased from the state of Ohio, 160 acres of the southwest quarter of Section 13 in Flatrock Township, recorded December 5, 1851. He paid 160.80 for the land. This was known as the Wabash and Erie Canal Land. The Governor at this time was Seabury Ford.
John B. Knipp bought from Samuel R. Adams the northwest quarter of Section 13 in Flatrock Township, recorded May 12, 1873. He paid $3,700.00 for the land.
In August 11, 1925, William R. Knipp bought 30 acres of land from John B. Knipp, his father. In the year of 1941 he purchased 80 acres, which is still in the family.
William R. Knipp was born in 1888 and died in the year of 1953. He married Clara B. Rettig in 1910 who preceded him in death in 1967. Both were born and raised in Henry County all their lives. They gave birth to nine children, among them a son who died 1927 in birth and a daughter Jean born in 1923 and died in 1926. All of theirchildren were born at the homestead. William and Clara attended the Saint John's Reformed Church, rural Holgate.
Orrin A. Knipp, born in the year 1912, married Bernadine A. Samlow, in the year 1934. His occupation is farming. Orrin and Bernidine attend the Peace Reformed Church. They have two children, Betty, born in 1936, and Linda born in 1941. They were both born in Henry County. Betty and Karl Nagy were married and have two children, Terri, born in 1958, and Heidi, born in 1973. Carl's occupation is construction. Linda and Donald Hantz were married and have four children: Orrin, born in 1961, Scott, born in 1963, Troy, born in 1967, and Natasha born in 1974. Donald's occupation is auto body repair.
Orrin and Bernidine made their first home 21/z miles north of Holgate for 14 years. They are now living 3 miles southwest of Holgate. They are the owners of forty acres of the Knipp farm.
Betty and Karl and their children live near Petersburg, Michigan. Linda and Donald and their children live in Angola, Ind.
Claire J. Knipp, born in 1913, married Ardella L. Eldred, born 1917 in the year of 1937. They had five children: Carolyn R. Knipp, born in 1938, married Donald L. Wulff in 1938 - (They had three children: Sherrie L. 1960; Terry L. 1965; Craig 1969.); Paul J. Knipp, born in 1939, married Brenda C. Hall in 1966 - (They had three children: Carl J. 1967; Paula 1970; and Brian K. 1972.); Carl W. Knipp, born in 1941, married Nancy Zimmerman in 1961 - (They had five children: Karen S. 1962; Kim M. 1966; Kathleen R. 1968; Carl W. Jr. 1969; and Christine M. 1970.); Arlene S. Knipp, born in 1947, married Eddie Hamm in 1967 -(They had two children, Melinda S. 1968 and Sara L. 1970; Ruth A. Knipp was born in 1955 and currently lives at home in Napoleon. They attend the Peace Reform Church, Nap.
Wilma P. Knipp was born in 1917 and graduated from Florida High School. She married Alvin G. Horst-man in 1937. They had seven children: Keith A. Horstman, born 1940, married Dora Jean Gressman in 1961 -(They had four children: Kelly R. 1963; Eric K. 1965; Jamie K. 1968; and Michele K. 1969. They live in Chester-land, Ohio. Keith's occupation is teaching.); Mary Lou Horstman was born in 1943 and married Raymond M. Askins in 1965 - (Raymond's occupation is a fireman. They had two children, Denise R., born in 1966, and Stacy J. in 1968. Their home is Falls Church, Virginia.); Kathleen P. Horst-man was born in 1944 and married Burdette L. Cooper in 1963 - (Burdette's occupation is a laborer. They had four children: Tara M. 1963; Dawn
E. and Paula A. 1964; and Aaron J. 1973. They live in rural Defiance, Ohio.); Frederick W. Horstman was born in 1947 and married Jane E. Goller in 1970 - (They had one child Chad M. born in 1974.); Barbara A. Horstman was born in 1949 and married William R. Harwell I in 1969 -(They had three children: Tammy L. born in 1969; William R. Bostelman born in 1939 married Don J. Paull in 1959 - (They had two children, Shawn E. 1960 and Tricia D. 1969.); Sue E. Bostelman, born in 1941, married Jim D. Matter in 1963 - (They had two children, David J. 1974 and Stephanie 1975.); Jean C. Bostelman, born in 1944, married Thomas E. Koppenhofer in 1963 - (They had four children: Angela M. 1964; Jennifer L. 1967; Kristine R. 1968; Natheniel T. 1970.); Deborah D. Bostelman was born in 1949 and married Richard Polanshek in 1974. Pamela K. Bostelman was born in 1951 and married Don A. Patterson in 1972. They had one child Benjamen A. in 1974. They attend St. John's Lutheran Church in Holgate.
Labon W. Knipp was born in Henry County in 1920 and served in the army in W.W. II as captain from 1940 to 1945. In 1941 he married Doris Eldridge and they made their home in Winnsboro, La. Labon is in the milk transporting business. They had six children, only Carol was born in Henry County in 1946 and was killed in Henry County in 1961. Peggy Knipp was born in 1941 and married Nathan Wynn; their children are Jeffery 1964, Leah 1966, Cheryl 1967, and William 1972. Judy Knipp was born in 1948 and married Don Strickland in 1972; they had one child Christi Lee born in 1973. Vicki Knipp was born in 1950 and married Gene Anderson in 1967; their children are Darcy 1969 and Jeannie 1974. Johnny Knipp was born in 1952 and married Rosette Thornton in 1972; they had one daughter born in 1975 which they named Twynne. Charlie Knipp was born in 1958 and is presently living at home. They attend the Baptist Church.
Lester Leroy Knipp was born in 1929 in Henry County and graduated from Florida High School. He married Sara-bell Hammon in 1949 and they first lived on Country Road K 1/4 mile east of State Route 108. He is employed at Brown's Bakery in Defiance, Ohio. They attend Grace Church in Defiance, Ohio. They had six children: Diane Knipp was born in 1950 in Defiance County - (She married Donald Dunn a school teacher in 1971. They have two children, Terra, born in 1972, and Krista, 1974.); David Knipp was born in 1951 in Defiance County and lives in Defiance, Ohio; Tom Knipp was born 1954 and married Kathleen Klopping in 1972 - (They have one son Brent, born in 1974. Tom works at John Mansville.); Gary Knipp was born in 1956 in Henry County and lives in Defiance, Ohio; Jan Knipp was born in 1960 in Henry County and lives in Defiance, Ohio; Laurie Knipp was born in 1962 in Henry County and lives in Defiance, Ohio.

Their other child is Julie A. born in 1958 and is still attending school.); In 1970 our niece Diane Reed came to make her home with us. She graduated from Holgate High School and Four County JVS in 1975. Her occupation is lab and x-ray secretary. They attend the Holgate United Methodist Church.
