"Henry" Hans Hinrich Joost was born in Wittorf, Germany, on Feb. 2, 1820. His parents were Hans Hinrich Joost and Katherina Mahnke Joost. He was united in marriage with Sophia Caroline "Wilhelmina" Bremer who was born in Visselhovede, Germany, on March 11, 1822. This couple had five children: "Doris" Anna Katherina Sophia Dorothia, born Nov. 3, 1850; Henry, born Feb. 23, 1853; Maria "Mary," born Jan. 8, 1856; Anna Catherine born Jan. 12, 1859; and Johann Hermann born on Jan. 24, 1865.
The family of seven came to the United States in the summer of 1870, and immediately settled in Adams Township, Defiance County, Ohio. Doris married Carl "Charlie" Schroeder and they lived in Sec. 31 of Ridgeville Township. Henry married Elise, nee Rosebrock, Wichers, who was born in 1860 in Rotenburg, Germany. They lived in Napoleon, Ohio, a short time. There they owned and operated a store with a saloon or restaurant in the back (later known as Spengler's). Occasionally, Elise would have to be the fourth player at the card table. They kept this business for about one year, then moved to a farm near Ridgeville Corners, Ohio.
Maria "Mary" married Christian "Otto" Schroeder who purchased the Schroeder homestead in Sec. 32 of Ridgeville Township, Nov. 15, 1879.
"Anna" Catherine married George Ripke in Dec. 21, 1877, and they moved to Paola, Kansas. There he was involved in a partnership with Wilhelm Becker, running a general store. Anna's husband passed away four years later leaving her with two young sons namely George, born Nov. 3, 1878, and Theodore, born Jan. 4, 1881. She then moved back to Henry County, and on March 6, 1884, married Ernest "Robert" Schroeder. They purchased a farm in Sec. 29, Ridgeville Township.
Johann "Hermann," being a partly disabled person, stayed with his parents and later with the Robert Schroeder family. He could work with his hands and would make useful items as picture frames, with hand carved work on them. He died on Oct. 23, 1891, and was buried in St. Marks Cemetery, Adams Township, Defiance Co.
Hans Hinrich Joost died March 17, 1895, and is buried in St. Johns Cemetery. Wilhelmina passed away earlier and is buried in Zion Cemetery Napoleon Township, Henry County, Ohio.
