The Arthur E. Johnston Family

Arthur E. Johnston was the son of Peter Johnston, 1842-1912, and Mary Heller Johnston, 1847-1901, who had been married on November 25, 1865. He was their last child.

Arthur Earl spent his entire life, with the exception of two years, on the home farm. He died April 10, 1928. He married Bertha May Box in October, 1904. She died June 26, 1970, and had been born on May 10, 1882.

Arthur and Bertha had four children. Maudie May married Vernon Liddle on June 19, 1926, and had one child, June Carol who was born April 15, 1929. She married Paul R. Van Gunten in 1951 and had Sue Ann and Paula Jean.

Arthur's son, James Russell married Elnora Lundy on July 6, 1929. There were three children: Annabelle born stillborn in 1930; Phylis Ann born in 1933; Eilene Jean was born in 1935 and married Ronnie Schau in 1955 and had Mitzi in 1957 and Cheryl in 1959. Mitzi married William Hamann in 1975.

Alice Marie was born to Arthur Earl and Bertha May. Alice Marie married Grant Dennis Lawrence on June 26, 1943. Their two children are Joan Marie born in 1947 and Dennis born in 1953 (see the D. Grant Lawrence history).

Arthur Earl Johnston spent his entire life, with the exception of two years, on the home farm. He died April 10, 1928, at the age of 47 years leaving his wife and four children. His widow, May, continued to live on the farm until 1962 when in ill health she went to live with her daughter Marie until her death on June 26, 1970, at the age of 88 years. The Johnston farm became a Henry County Centennial Farm in 1948.

The Peter Johnston children were: 1. Peter Emanuel; 2. James E.; 3. Catherine Bell; 4. Mary Agnes; 5. Ranatus Emory; 6. Martha; 7. Charles; 8. Arthur E.

James Russell Johnston married Elnora Lundy on July 6, 1929. There were three children. Annabelle was born on May 5, 1930, died on the same day. Phylis Ann was born on June 24, 1933; Eleen Jean was born in 1935 and married Ronnie Schau in 1955 and had daughters, Mitzi born in 1957 and Cheryl in 1959. Mitzi married William Hamann in 1975 and had a son born in 1977.

Alice Marie Johnston married Dennis Grant Lawrence on June 26, 1943. Their two children are Joan Marie, born in 1947, and Dennis, born in 1953. See the Grant Lawrence history.

Roy Chester Johnston married Marie in 1934. They had three children. Richard Roy was born on December 22, 1934 and married Shirley Ann Bruning in 1954. Richard and Shirley had three sons. Richard Lee was born in 1955 and married Janet Kay Hahn in 1975 and has one son born in 1977. Ronald Scott was born in 1957 and married Laurie Lee Witt in 1978. Gerald Ross was born in 1962.

Janice Marie was born on December 21, 1939 and married Larry Gardner in 1967. They have two sons: Scott Allen born on June 17, 1969 and Michael James born on March 4, 1972.

Mary Lou was born on October 10, 1946 and married Larry Beroske in 1962. Their son, Jeffry Charles, was born on April 7, 1963.

Roy passed away on November 4, 1971 at the age of fifty-six years.
