John Peter Hornung
John Peter Hornung purchased one hundred and sixty acres in Pleasant Township and settled on it in 1837.
Mr. Hornung laid out the village of New Bavaria, or as it was and is still called "Neuber", in Pleasant Township in 1844. He was the first postmaster.
In 1855 he started manufacturing pearl ash, and in 1882 started a general store, and in 1883 a hoop and stave factory in the town.
He was born in 1823; married Catharine Desgranges in 1844; was postmaster of New Bavaria for many years.
He served as a county surveyor; and in 1854 was elected a county commissioner and served for twelve years.
