Barlow is an old, respected name with roots tracing back to early England. According to parish records, almost all entries in the early 1700's were witnessed by Peter Barlow, Sr., and Peter Barlow, Jr. They were perhaps clerks. The Barlow name is very evident in the church records and in activities in the Church of England. This strong belief in religious worship and in church activities served as a foundation for their adventuresome journey to the new world of America in 1832. Albert Barlow, recently retired postmaster of Colton, Ohio, merchant and general store owner, has lived his entire life in Colton, Ohio. In 1933, he married Ruby Babcock of Swanton, Ohio. To this marriage were born two sons, Gary Charles in 1935 and Alan in 1950. Albert Barloi,v's parents were Ira Thomas and Anne Agnes Nees Barlow. Anne was raised in Kentucky by her parents, Conrad and Elizabeth Fleckenstein Nees. Ira's parents were Thomas and Ann Dermott Barlow. Ira and Anna's children were Montford Burton, 1891-1949; Lura Iona, 18931978; Lottie Elizabeth, 1897-1915; Edith Alvina, 1900-; Albert Mathias, 1904-; and Luster Marvin, 1906-1974.
Ira Barlow's father, Thomas Barlow, was born in Shropshire, England on December 12, 1830. The Barlow family attended church in the neighboring county of Cheshire. Thomas was baptized in the Malpas Church on December 26, 1830. His parents Randle and Catharine Read BarloW lived near Malpas, a small village near Whitehall in the southwest of Cheshire. The village is less than five miles from the Welsh border. The church, dedicated to St. Oswald, is a fine specimen of Gothic architecture which prevailed toward the conclusion of the reign of Henry VII. The parish registers begin in 1561 and are fairly complete from that date.
Although Thomas, the first child of Randle and Catharine was born in England, other children of Randle and Catharine were born in Ohio. Ann was born in 1832, died in 1836; Margaret was born in 1835, died in 1921; John was born in 1838, died in 1912; and Sarah was born in 1840, died in 1922.
Randle Barlow's parents, Thomas's grandparents, were John and Abigail Barlow of Iscoyd, a township in the Whitewell parish, a part of Malpas before 1870. John and Abigail Barlow had thirteen children: John, baptized in the Malpas parish on September 29, 1791; Thomas, baptized on April 2, 1793; James, baptized on July 16, 1794; Sarah, baptized on July 1, 1796; George, baptized on September 4, 1797; Eoizabeth, baptized on July 11, 1799; Mary, baptized on March 20, 1801; Anne, baptized on November 2, 1803; Margaret, baptized on July 14, 1805; Peter, baptized on November 20, 1806; Catharine, baptized on February 10, 1809; Randle, baptized on April 30, 1810; and Emma, baptized on June 14, 1812.
