L. D. Hissong was born in Richland County, Ohio on April 1, 1836. He came to Napoleon in 1860 and was a salesman for Scott and Heller Mercantile.
He enlisted in Company I, 68th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, under Captain Poe, and was appointed orderly sergeant. He was commissioned a captain of the 5th U.S.C. Artillery and was wounded in 1863. He was commissioned a major in the same regiment and commanded the right wing of the fortifications around Vicksburg after the surrender of that city to Union forces.
His Napoleon friends made and sent him, in token of their appreciation for- his services, a standard of regimental colors, bearing his name and rank and inscription "Milliken's Bend, June 7, 1863".
L. D. returned to Napoleon after the war and married Jennie Carr in 1870. She was born in Hancock County, Ohio in 1850. They had a son, Harry Eby, born in March 1873.
L. D. Hissong family lived in Napoleon in 1875 where he was in the mercantile business.
