Lorenzo Higby was born on October 4, 1808 in Saratoga County, New York. He died on August 3, 1882 at the age of seventy-three years. He was the grandson of John Higby, and a son of Lewis Higby. His ancestors resided in Saratoga County, New York during the Revolutionary War.
John Higby, and his son, Lewis, were captured in October, -1777, by the Indians. Lewis was fifteen years old when captured. They were taken to the Island of Oleans in the St. Lawrence River, and there adopted into the tribe of Indians that had captured them. They were able to escape in 1783 and work themselves back to their home.
Lorenzo and his parents moved to Jefferson County, New York in 1820. He married Betsey M. Barrows in 1832. Betsey died in 1837. Their sons were Sidney, who lived in Chicago, Illinois, in 1882, and Seymour who died before 1882.
Lorenzo married for his second wife, Mrs. Adeline S. Dowd, a widow, on May 29, 1844, in Oswego County, New York. She was a daughter of William and Lucy Stow, and a sister of Mrs. Charles Tubbs. The Tubbs history is found in Volume I. Lorenzo and Adeline had two daughters.
The Higby family came to Ridgeville Corners, Ohio, Henry County, in 1844 shortly after his second marriage.
Lorenzo and Adeline were two of the original founders of the First Congregational Church of Ridgeville. He also assisted in the organization of the Napoleon Presbyterian Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Higby are buried in the Locust Grove Cemetery at Ridgeville Corners. Mrs. Betsey Higby is buried in Oswego County, New York.
