The Hickman Insurance Agency was a member of Napoleon's business community for twenty-five years.
Mrs. Pauline L. Hickman purchased the business from the Frease Insurance Agency in 1945, and represented many of the leading insurance companies as an Independent agent located in the Community Bank Building and the Heller Building.
She also served as secretary of the Napoleon Insurance Agents Association for twenty years. In 1967 she sold the business to Associated Insurance Agency, and retired in 1970.
The Hickman family, George, Pauline, and two young sons, Keith and Lynn, had come to Napoleon from Lima in 1929. They moved into the house at 513 West Washington Street, which had just been built on the site of the old family home of Dr. Eugene Harrison.
Mr. Hickman was field representative for Oliver Farm Equipment Company.
Later, during World War II, the older son Keith joined the Army Air
Corps, was trained as a pilot and flew the P47 (Thunderbolt) fighter-bomber. He lost his life in Belgium on November 30, 1944.
He was previously employed at the Community Bank in Napoleon.
The younger son, Lynn Hickman, with his wife, Carolyn (Hustwick) and family, now lives in Wauseon, Ohio. He is employed by Wauseon Manufacturing Company in production control.
They have one daughter, Kharis, and three sons, Douglas, Scott, and Mark, the latter two at home.
Douglas lived in Napoleon with his grandmother, Pauline Hickman, after he was 15 years old, attended Napoleon High School, Taylor University, Defiance College, and United Theological Seminary in Dayton. He married Vera Mae Westrick in November, 1974, and is now serving as pastor of Calvary United Methodist Church at Williams Center, Ohio, and Mt. Olive and Logan United Methodist Churches in Williams County.
Kharis graduated from International Junior College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and is working for Lincoln Life Insurance Company. She married Russell M. Roach of Fort Wayne in May, 1975.
The Hickman family extends greetings to the "dear hearts and gentle people" who live in our community.
