Johann Hastedt was born in Hiddingen, Germany, on October 3, 1829. He married Anna Meier, who was born on February 17, 1829, in Hassel, Germany. They immigrated to Monroe Township with their family. They lived in Elery, Ohio. Johann died October 24, 1901, and his wife, Anna died October 20, 1906. They are buried in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Monroe Township.
Their son Fred was born in Hiddingen, Germany, on March 6, 1866. He married Emma Mueller, born July 19, 1877, on August 9, 1896, in Flatrock Township by Pastor Fischer. They made their home near Elery, Ohio.
Emma was a daughter of Friederich Mueller of Verdenermoor, Germany, and his wife Maria Luedes of Soltau, Germany. After Maria's death in Germany, Friederich and two of his children, August and Emma came to the United States. One daughter, Maria remained in Germany.
Friederich Mueller lived in Elery, Ohio, where he made wooden shoes. He also played the violin in a local tavern for free beer. Friederich was born in 1844 and he died on July 22, 1935, of old age.
Fred and Emma Hastedt were the parents of Eddie, born December 19, 1896, and Fred Jr., born November 15, 1900. One son was stillborn on March 12, 1907. They lived very humbly on a farm in Monroe Township now owned by Eddie Hastedt.
Fred died of cancer September 29, 1943. Emma died of a heart attack in November, 1950. They are buried in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.
Eddie married Alma Mahlman on March 18, 1920, in Immanuel Lutheran parsonage by Pastor Wockenfuss. They are the parents of Elmer, born January 6, 1923, and Norma, born February 17, 1929. They attended Arps School first and later finished their education in Hamler High School. After serving in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific, Elmer married Dorothy Miller on July 14, 1946. They are engaged in farming near Holgate.
They have three children: Judy born June 9, 1947; Robert born May 27, 1950; and Mary Jane born January 27, 1953. Judy is a woman barber in Toledo, Ohio. Robert served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He is now with the Ohio State Patrol. Mary is a beautician.
Judy married Philipp McGrew and has a daughter Michelle. Robert married Debbie Smith of Hamler. They have a son Christopher. Mary married Robert Miller and lives in Defiance.
Norma married Freddie Bostelman on September 25, 1949. They have four children: Thomas was born July 3, 1950; Linda was born February 7, 1954; Richard was born March 30, 1958; and Bruce was born June 7, 1964. They all attended Jewell School and then Tinora High School, Tom served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He is now employed by Campbell Soup of Napoleon. Linda is working at Kroger's in Defiance. Tom is married to Betty Lienau and they have a son Bradley.
Fred Jr. married Bertha Nagel on December 6, 1922, in Immanuel Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm, corner of Route 281 and Route 109. They are the parents of two children: Wilma, born October 11, 1926; and Eldon, born April 1, 1930. Both children attended a one room school known as Arps School for a few years and then went on to Hamler School.
Fred Jr. became suddenly ill and was taken to Defiance Hospital. He died November 16, 1942, from hemorrhage caused by a gastric ulcer. Bertha then remarried Fred F. Elling of Defiance County, in November, 1947, She died of cancer in April, 1968, in Wauseon Hospital.
Wilma married Wilbur Buchenberg at Immanuel Lutheran Church, They lived on various farms in Henry County and then purchased a home at 514 High Street in Napoleon, Ohio. They have two sons: Jerry, born December 3, 1945; and Kenneth, born January 30, 1950. They are both graduates of Napoleon High School. Wilma is employed as a waitress at the Holiday Inn of Napoleon. Jerry lives in Defiance and works at Johns-Manville. Kenneth married Theresa Sanchez and lives in Napoleon. They have a daughter Heather.
Eldon married Evelyn Schweinhagen on October 2, 1949, in St. John's Lutheran Church, Freedom Township. They make their home at 731 Erie in Napoleon. Eldon first worked at Napoleon Eggs where he was a government inspector. About ten years ago he was employed by Maumee Vending Company of Defiance, his route being at Bowling Green State University.

They have three children: Brenda, born September 26, 1950; James, born March 31, 1953; and Bruce was born February 8, 1957. They all attended St. Paul Lutheran Parochial School and Napoleon High School. Brenda is also a 1969 graduate of Columbus Business University, Jim works at Safe-way Plating and Bruce works at Bernicke's Supermarket, Brenda married Carey Plummer and they have a daughter Paula Jo.
