Richard Grimes owned the first farm west of Florida on the old Route 24. He settled there in the early 1830's and was one of the first settlers of Flatrock Township. Of course, the Gunn family was there long before anyone else.
I believe that Richard Grimes was one of the first township officials when they held their first election. He died when my grandfather was a small boy, and I have no information on him except that he, or his father, originally came from Maryland, as I found in early federal census records (1850) that his brother Charles was born in Maryland in about 1794. Charles did not settle in Henry County but lived near Decatur, Indiana.
My grandmother Grimes was a Clark, and her mother was a Stubbs. When I was a boy we attended the Clark family reunion. The Clark and Stubbs families were the first settlers in Springfield Township, Williams County, Ohio. The reunions were held each year at the Springfield Grange Hall just off the old Route 6 on the Stryker-Evansport Road.
