James D. Good, the youngest son of six children born to William and Samantha Jane (Houser) Good, was born June 26., 1875, in Fairfield County, State of Ohio. Having lost his mother (in death) in 1881, he was cared for and raised by his father and older brothers and sisters. In 1881, his father, William, hearing of prosperity in the land of Henry County, sent the four younger children by train, while he and two older sons packed their household items in a wagon, one team, came to settle in territory two miles west of McClure on what is now County Road 6. Here the land was cleared and a two story log house was built. (Page 366, Vol. I). The family lived here and as land was cleared and farmed, he built the family home. The barn was built first, then the frame house. The family went to the Fisher School and the Brethren Church one half mile south of the farm. On April 1, 1896, James D. was married to Metta Foor. They went to housekeeping in the log house, where three children were born. In 1899, they moved to Harrison township. During this time two more children were born. In 1903, they moved to 40 acre farm on U.S. Route 6. Here they lived until 1917, and six more children were born.
During the period of 1903-1917 he farmed his 40 acres and helped his father farm his 80 acres. In 1917 his parents moved into the town of McClure. James and his family moved onto the home place. The family attended the Fisher School and went to Olive Branch Church. After the closing of the school and church, the family went into McClure School and attended the McClure United Brethren Church. James served on the school board many years, and was superintendent of Sunday School for some time. They joined with neighbors to help one another at any special time, such as butchering for winter, threshing, etc. Many early years, they cut ice in the winter and stored it in the neighborhood ice house. James D. and wife were members of Modern Woodman, Royal Neighbor and Grange lodges. They served on many committees and enjoyed the association of many friends.
