The Asa Babcocks and the James Crocketts are my paternal great grandparents and this is their history.
Asa and Mary Babcock
Asa Babcock was the son of Jacob and Nancy (Wilcox) Babcock natives of New York State.
Asa was twelve years old when he accompanied his mother to Hancock County and remained there until at the age of seventeen he enlisted in Co A 21st Ohio Regiment. He was wounded three times while in service and taken prisoner near Nashville in 1862. After his military service, he returned to the home farm.
In 1872, Asa married Mary Ann Semler, daughter of Peter and Catherine (Leonard) Semler. She was born in Pennsylvania, in 1842. To this union were born eleven children, namely: Jacob, Anna, John (my grandfather), Elnorais, Jesse, Vernelia, Nettie, Cora, Aaron, Reuben, and Jerry.
Mary Ann passed away September 18, 1904, and later in life Asa took a second wife, Sarah Ordway.
He was active in The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Grand Army of the Republic, and the Grange.
They are buried in Hoy Cemetery.
John Babcock married Clara Crockett and the following is the history of her family.
