Dr. J.C. Emery was born at Walpole, New Hampshire, on April 1, 1798. He died on February 26, 1884, at the age of eighty-five years, ten months, and twenty-six days.
He moved to Lake County, Ohio, in 1816, to study medicine with his brother, John Emery who lived there. J.C. Emery practiced medicine at Carrollton, Ohio.
He married Lucinda Gould on Octo ber 19, 1824. She died in 1856, about a year after the family moved to Ridgeville Township, Henry County, where her husband practiced medicine.
They had eight sons and four daughters. Those living in 1884 were Robert, Margaret, Ann, Janes (a son), John, and Joseph.
The family belonged to the Presbyterian Church.
George Emery, a brother of J.C., ived in Kansas in 1884 and was ninety-two years old. His sister, Mrs. Bailey, lived in Lake County, Ohio, in 1884, and was eighty years old.
Daniel Emery, the son of James, was a noted surveyor of land and a selectman. He was chosen deacon of the Congregational Church, Bewick, Maine, and elder from 1703 to 1720, and was one of the original members and founders of that church.
Noah Emery, son of Daniel, had as his trade, cooper, but he became a lawyer and was the first lawyer to reside in the state of Maine. His grandson became a Justice of the Supreme Court of Maine. Noah was commissioned 'King's Attorney' of the Province of Maine, now Attorney General. He possessed an extensive library of law, physics, divinity and history. One of his law books, the earliest edition of "The Laws of the Colony of Massachusetts", the 1660 edition, with his autograph and date of purchase now belongs to the Massachusetts State Library where it is kept under lock and key. The librarian siad it is worth it's weight in gold as there are only two or three copies in existence.
Daniel Emery, fifth generation, son of Noah, was constable of Kettery, clerk of the 4th Foot Company of which his father was captain, and another Emery, ensign. He was a cooper and a lawyer. Being the oldest male heir, he inherited large land estates in New Hampshire, among which were certain proprietor's rights, in the town of Dartmouth, now the town of Jefferson. He conveyed this property by. deed to Dartmouth College in 1769, the year of it's founding.
Nathaniel Emery settled in Throndyke, Maine, where he was prominent and held many important offices. He had eight children of which Levi Emery was the great-grandfather of the present Emerys. Levi and Lois Keen, of Montwille, Maine, had ten children, the eldest being Judson
Emery who was Lura Murrey Hartman's great-grandfather.
Judson Emery, the 8th generation, had two daughters, Ophelia and Erika.
Erika married Solomen Murrey and lived on the family farm north and east of Grelton, Ohio. Eltheon Emery, a cousin of Erika's, a carpenter and farmer, lived nearby on a farm given to him by Judson Emery. Erika and Solomon's children were: Norton, Maude Struble Howe, Enno, and Orris. Norton married Mabel Packard. They lived in the same area near Grelton on a farm purchased by Solomon Murrey. Five children were born to them: Lura Murrey Hartman was born on September -18, 1902; Dale was born on September 11, 1903; Eula and Carl both died in infancy; and Opal Murrey Knapp was born on July 8, 1911.
Lura, the 17th generation descendant of the Emerys, married Harry Hartman of Malinta, son of Richard and Nellie Foor Hartman. They began their life together on a farm one mile north of McClure, Ohio, that was purchased by Harry's father. A few years later, they purchased the farm.
There are two children: a daughter, Marie I lartman Cooper, living in Detroit; and a son, Paul Hartman, Sr. who lives on a farm nearby.
Lura retains a piece of the land from the Emery family near Grelton and continues to live on the farm near McClure which has been her home for over fifty years. She has four grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.
Marie Hartman married Eugene Cooper and they had two boys, Craig and Eric. Craig was killed in an automobile accident.
Paul Hartman has a step-son, David Martin, and a son, Paul, Jr., and a stepdaughter, Angela Brown. David has two girls, Tina and Tricia. Paul, Jr. has one son, Christopher.
