The Ellinwood history dates back to 1635 when Ralph Ellenwood embarked for America on September 19, 1635. As recorded in the London Customs House, he sailed on the ship, "True Love", at the age twenty-eight years. He was born in England in 1607. He arrived at Salem, Massachusetts by November, where he was given one half acre of ground.
The name, spelled Ellenwood, Ellingwood, and Elnwood, was traced to a single emigrant, Ralph Ellenwood, in 1635. The spelling changed with the different families, and as names were recorded, it was spelled as it sounded and even was Allenwood.
Pamela Doty, a paternal descendant of Edward Doty, who came over on the Mayflower in 1620, married Samuel Ellinwood, a great-great-greatgrandson of Ralph Ellenwood. Their son, Sylvester Ellinwood, born in 1813, married Lucy Angelina Delano, whose father, Philip, is an ancestor of two U.S. Presidents, U.S. Grant, and Franklin Delano Rosevelt. This Ellin- wood family had eight children. The Delano name was often used as a middle name for several generations. The last reference was Don Delano Ellin- wood, Jr., born in 1961.
Many of the Ellinwood names -- June, Robert, Edward, Dr. Dan, Don, Jacob, George, Vera, Lucy, and Abbie — are found in earlier Ellinwood history are familiar in the present Ellinwood family.
