Thomas Cuff, father of the late Judge John V. Cuff, was born May 27, 1812, at Castlehyde near Fermoy in County Cork, Ireland. He was graduated from the University of Edinburgh and came to America when quite young. He married Catherine Barry and they lived for a while in New York City. During the decade of the 40's, Thomas Cuff and wife moved to Fulton County, Ohio, and spent the rest of their days near Wauseon. They reared a family of five children, one of them being Judge John V. Cuff.
Judge Cuff was born in Chesterfield Township, Fulton County, on August 21, 1851, and died at his home on W. Washington Street in Napoleon on October 25, 1906, at the age of fifty-five.
Judge Cuff received his education at Valparaiso University in Indiana and some years later his law degree from the University of Cincinnati. For sixteen years he taught school in both Ohio and Michigan. After passing the bar, he practiced law in Liberty Center and Napoleon. From 1893 to 1899 he filled the office of Judge of the Probate Court. In 1878 he married Edna Jane Fraker and of this union were born three sons: John F., William A., and Frederick V. and one daughter Herma Jane, who married Dr. Arthur M. Harrison of Bowling Green, Ohio. All three sons attended Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, and Herma attended Harcourt School for girls, also at Gambier, Ohio.
The oldest son of Judge Cuff was John F. Cuff. He was active in politics in Napoleon, Ohio, holding at various times the offices of Clerk of Courts, Mayor, State Representative and Justice of the Peace. In 1907 he married Marian L. Belknap, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerimiah Belknap. They had four children named John V., Nathaniel B., Kathleen, and Mary Ellen. John V. Cuff has followed a family tradition and is now a practicing attorney in Napoleon. He married the former Montana Hoops of Hamler, Ohio, who has taught kindergarten for a number of years. They have three children: Dr. John V. Cuff, Honolulu, Hawaii; Thomas P. Cuff, New York City; and Susan Louise Cuff, Cleveland, Ohio.
Nathaniel B. Cuff, a retired insurance adjuster, married the former Lois
Clapp and they reside in Waterville, Ohio. Their only child, Stephen W. Cuff also lives in Waterville.
Kathleen is the wife of William A. Dodge and they make their home in Mentor, Ohio. They are the parents of three children: Douglas W. Dodge, Chicago, Ill.; John A. Dodge, Mentor, Ohio; and Patricia Krauss of Chardon, Ohio.
Mary Ellen Cuff teaches in the Bryan Schools and resides in Napoleon, Ohio. Submitted by the Family
