Samuel Arthur Crowell was born on June 30, 1904. His mother was Maude King, born December 25, 1883, a daughter of Samuel King. His father was Frank Crowell born August 24, 1875. Frank and Maude were married July 20, 1902. To this union were born the following children: Samuel Arthur, Frieda, who died as a small child, Elverda (Mrs. Walter Speiser), a resident of Liberty Center, Alice (Armbruster) of Grand Rapids, and Norma, a resident of Bowling Green.
Samuel Crowell's grandfather, Samuel Adam Crowell was born in Sandusky County, Ohio, on September 23, 1849, the son of Samuel A. and Rebecca (Remsburg) Crowell. In 1881 he came to Damascus Township, Henry County, and purchased one hundred and thirty-one acres of land, which he developed into one of the best farms in this section of the county. He built a fine barn in 1904, and in 1905 he erected a poured concrete home, unusual in construction for that period of time. Besides carrying on general farming, he raised Hereford cattle and Percheron horses. Frank was active in constructing the river road adjacent to his farm and concrete bridges, still being used by today's traffic. In 1912 Frank purchased the home place from his father, who removed to Fremont, Ohio. Samuel Arthur Crowell is still active in the management of the family farm.
Several families of the name of Crowell in Halifax County of North Carolina are direct descendants of the father of Oliver Cromwell. They left England for America and settled in New Jersey in the year of 1774. Two brothers (John and Edward) of Oliver Cromwell left England and resolved to change their name. This was done with a solemn ceremony and by writing their names each one on a paper and each cutting from the paper the letter"M" and casting it into the sea. The family pedigree on vellum recording this fact was with the family in North Carolina in an ornamental chest which, with other valuables, was seized in 1781 by a scouting party of Tarleton Legion and carried off. The family made another record of the transaction which is preserved by their descendants.

My father was born August 24, 1875. The Crowells settled in New Jersey, but soon after they emigrated to Halifax County, North Carolina, near Asheville.
