William A. Choate was born at Tiffin, Ohio, on November 28, 1831, to Thomas and Louisa Choate who left Maine and located in Tiffin, Ohio.
William came to Napoleon in 1848 to read law in the office of Edward Sheffield. William graduated from law school and in 1857 was elected prosecuting attorney of Henry County for a term of four years.
He enlisted in 1861 and was elected captain of Company B, 38th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry; became a Lt. colonel in 1863, a colonel in 1864, and died while trying to save the regimental colors at a battle on September 11, 1864.
William A. Choate married R.M. Magill, in 1856. She was the daughter of James and Esther Magill. The Magill family settled in Henry County in 1834.
Children born to William and R. Magill Choate were Ella May, 1857; Thomas A., 1859; and Addie, 1861.
