Frederick W. Cheney was born in Monroe Township February 7, 1873 to William Thomas Cheney (born August 27, 1831 in Hancock County, died July 19, 1907 in Henry County) and Lucinda Ellen Gunter (born October 14, 1833 in Henry County, died June 4, 1919). Her parents were Martin Gunter and Mary Jones Gunter of Richland County, Ohio.
F.W. Cheney was married March 31, 1895 to Effa Adella Murray (born April 5, 1872 in Flatrock Township, died January 24, 1920 in Harrison Township). Her parents were James Murray (born November 21, 1841, Trumball County, died June 11, 1887, Harrison Township) and Christena Smith (born January 14, 1843, died September 26, 1898). Her parents were Michael Smith (born in Germany, September 7, 1818, died in Harrison Township December 17, 1880) and Elizabeth A. (born in Germany; March 20, 1821, died October 15, 1880).
Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Cheney spent their first married years in Richfield Township where three children were born. Lulu Imo was born December 27, 1895. She married V. Ray Taylor of Monroe Township and they were the parents of twin daughters, Marjorie Neva (wife of Glenn S. Farison) and Virginia Eva (wife of Paul L. Jones). Edna Pearl Cheney was born January 11, 1897. She married Harve J. Baker of Wauseon, Ohio. Their son Ned E. Baker married Joanne Haase, daughter of Bert Haase, Napoleon. William George Cheney, born June 21, 1898, died May 28, 1963, was married, to Agnes Daily of Toledo, Ohio.
In the fall of 1898, Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Cheney purchased 40 acres in Harrison Township. The property was formerly owned by Mrs. Cheney's parents. Six more children were born on that farm.
Hattie Lucinda was born November 5, 1899. She married Harold Leadom of Harrison Township and they lived in Detroit, Michigan for many years before moving to Largo, Florida.
Carrie Violet Cheney, born August 6, 1901, married Fred E. Wegner of Detroit, Michigan. They live in Toledo, Ohio and are the parents of Florence Bell, of Miami, Florida, and son Fred of Toledo.
Cloyce Worline Cheney was born August 28, 1903 and died July 16, 1961. He married Martha Juringus of Cleveland, Ohio and spent many years teaching school in the Cleveland area. Later, he came to Napoleon and operated the Kaiser-Frazer automobile dealership. They are the parents of Alice, Anne and William Cheney.
Lydia Ellen Cheney was born June 20, 1905. She taught school in Henry County for several years before marrying Earl Philo and moving to Bowling Green, Ohio. They adopted a son, Charles Earl, who lives near Atlanta, Georgia. After Mr. Phil's death, Lydia married Gilbert Gisler of Harrison Township. They reside in Largo, Florida.
Mary Lurane Cheney, born September 7, 1908, also taught school in Henry County before marrying Blake Wendt of Fulton County. They are the parents of Howard, Darlene and Thomas, all living near Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and John Wendt of California.
Wanita Lavita, born August 14, 1910, married Dougal W. McKay of Toledo, where they lived for many years and raised three daughters, Sherry Anita, Janis Adella and Lynne Agnes. Mrs. McKay lives in Largo, Florida.
F.W. Cheney was married a second time, in 1922, to Alice M. Caville of Toledo. They continued to live on the farm until the children were grown.
Mr. Cheney served on the Harrison Township School Board for four years, and spent several years on the County School Board with Mr. A.P. Stalter as County Superintendent.
Mr. and Mrs. Cheney moved to Napoleon where he served two years as Superintendent and Caretaker of the Napoleon Fairgrounds. Later, he was elected Constable of Napoleon and served in that position for several years. Mr. Cheney also worked with Reynard Curdes selling real estate. He continued in that business until his retirement.
Mr. Cheney passed away at his residence on West Clinton Street, August 20, 1956. Mrs. Cheney died in Toledo in November, 1958.
