Edward was the son of Mathew and Martha J. (Dull) Brown. Mathew was born in Wayne County, Ohio, on February 22, 1837, and passed away on December 2, 1907. Martha J. was born in Wood County on August 28, 1844, and passed away on March 30, 1905.
Edward was born in Grand Rapids Township in Wood County on January 7, 1868. He attended the public schools, one of which was the Councilman School.
Edward was married in Damascus Township on April 22, 1894, to Stella Hockman, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Shepard) Hockman. Jacob was born on March 18, 1832, and died, January 31, 1913. Mary was born on January 27, 1835, and died, May 15, 1910.
The Brown home was in Section 36 of Damascus Township. The farm had 240 acres and he also owned an eighty acre tract in the same township. Their first home, a seven room house, burned in November of 1906, and was rebuilt in 1907 and 1908.
To this union four children were born: Clem, born February 8, 1895; Earl, born April 14, 1897; Esther, born May 26, 1899; and Bryce, born July 5, 1904. The boys and Esther have always lived in and around McClure. Clem, a farmer, married Lola Frazier, daughter of Dave and Blanche Frazier. They had four children: Bonita, Cecil, Warren, and Jean. Clem passed away on January 6, 1974. Earl and Robert's father were farmers. His complete history follows later. Esther married Roy Alspaugh, son of William and Myrtle (Fuller) Alspaugh. They had six children: Norman, Pauline, Herman, Bill, Jane, and Carolyn. Esther lives on Rt. 6 in McClure and works as a telephone operator. Bryce (Pete) married Norma Rowland, daughter of Jim and Clara(Miller) Rowland. They had a daughter Joyce. Norma passed away in August, 1928. His second wife was Edna Kelly and they lived together five years. Bryce lives east of McClure and is retired.
Ed and Stella were members of the Bethany Church and are buried in the Hockman Cemetery, McClure, Ohio.
