Henry F. Brandt together with Eugene Rowland purchased the C. J. Precht general store located in the Leaba Building in the spring of 1918. He moved his family to Hamler later that year after purchasing the C. J. Daum residence in the east end of town.
A few years later, these two partners purchased the general store of Johnson and Ehrneman which was located in the building now occupied by the Hamler Locker. Sometime later, Mr. Rowland decided to engage in farming, at which time the partnership was dissolved.
Mr. Brandt then continued the business with the assistance of his wife and children. Due to ill health, his store was sold in 1938. During his years in Hamler, Mr. Brandt served the village as its clerk and treasurer.
He was married to Caroline Garber on Nov. 5, 1908. To this union were born four children: Richard born in 1910 (now deceased); Edmund born in 1912 and now living in Toledo; Edna born in 1916, living in Leipsic; and Bernita born in 1923, now living in Defiance.
The family were members of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and were very active in its growth and administration.
